Default HD Maintenance

I was wondering how many of you all actually get the 5,000 10,000 mile scheduled maintenance done at a Harley dealership. I have a new 2007 Road King and the first 1000m maintenance is free. After that it seems pretty expensive for basically what looks like an oil change and some minor checks and adjustments.

We have a guy here that has done nothing but work on HD bikes since he was 15. (now 49) He has been to the HD mech courses and is certified and does the services by the book just like the dealer but charges much less and gets it done faster. He has done our bikes since new. I do the oil changes myself but anything I do not feel comfortable doing goes to him. Any warrenty work if needed will go to the HD shop.

I had the dealer do the first service on my bike.Because of the high price and complaints I had about the tech,I do my own service now.

I had the dealer do the 5000 mile service. Usually change the oil myself. The dealer I use has been great and I have waited while they did it.

I just bought my first Harley this summer, an -03 Heritage with 2,500 miles. After couple months of problem free riding of riding I had a dealer do the 5k checkup. One of the reasons I bought a Harley as opposed to a BMW was the simplistic no frills design and I thought I would be easy or (easier) to work on. (Its a Carb engine) I plan on getting a service manual and doing most if not all of the maintainance and possible future modifications myself. Especially since the waranty has expired.

I plan to due oil changes myself, but working in a car dealership I know how people that get only waranty work get treated, I feel if you have any issues that may be not covered, but you have sent some work the dearlers way you may get treated better, maybe not fair but if you have a issue a week after your waranty is up you may get some considertion.

Ask around.
A lot of indy shops dont have to advertize because of word of mouth.
