The UK has no decibel test as you describe, it is up to the individual tester to establish in his mind if the exhaust is too loud or if it is marked 'not for road use''
I have failed the test because of the shop in Bury St Edmunds telling me that the exhaust was too loud where I then had to go buy the stock pipes that I didn't bring with me. I would say that was failing a decibel level to put the bike on the road.
Haven't even finished my current deployment in Iraq, and I find out I'm on orders for Germany. Now don't get me wrong I know part of being in the military is pcs'ing but the timing is crappy, and I can't change my orders. Another riding season in the tubes...... On the bright side I will atleast make Daytona before I go... I'm going to be stationed in Baumholder, and I plan to take my Street Glide. My question is for anyone who's been stationed in Germany, Is there a Harley Davidson near there? Quality of work? Or should I just take some basic tools and learn to wrench on the bike myself. I won't have a garage so I'll have to get a good bike cover.
You got a HD dealership in Kaiserslautern, in Idar Oberstein, in Saarbruecken, all within an hour ride. You also have a crapload of indies around.
What do you mean, another riding season in the tubes? There's some exellent riding in Germany.
Quality of work? You're kidding, right? It's friggin Germany! Having grown up and lived most of the last 20 years in the area, I can assure you that the work and the educational level of the techs in the states doesn't come even remotely close to what you'll get over there.
Garage? Not a problem. Just find a buddy or two with bikes. In Germany, you can find single garages to rent. The last time I had to rent one, I paid 50 euros a month. Or, just hang out with the bombies (Bombholders MC) Baumholder. They are good guys, and they probably store your bike if they like you.
Going unaccompanied for two years...sounds the opposite of loosing a riding season.
Maybe I'm selfish, but the family would be getting uprooted and going on an accompanied tour. If it's you trying to let the kids stay in the same school with the same friends so they are "at home", I call BS. Keeping them isolated from the rest of the world seams a little off. Military kids know how to adapt to new environments, make new friends and "find their way".
Enjoy the riding in Europe, I've heard nothing but good about it. I don't have personal experience there, only passed through a few times going to other fun crapholes.

The problem is my Kids are too old..lol 20, Junior in college, 23, home going to school and granddaughter. Wife dual enrolled in college plus have to do internship. The good thing is that she's a school teacher, so with all her breaks she'll be coming over all the time anyway. Plus if I do an unaccompanied tour I don't have to worry about trying to sell or rent the house. Family is really getting tired of moving every 3-4 years.
Plus: I'm sure they will all be coming over during summer break anyway.

The house I can understand. Kids 20 and 23..? Cut the umbilical cord. Not sure if you've heard, but they offer college classes overseas, no reason to use that as reason to homestead the rest of the family.

You can say what you what but no actual test was carried out other than by ear. Fact is if you went in with any sort of 'race' pipe then you were gonna fail, it is of course standard procedure to skip round this by swapping pipes over for the MOT then a quick swap back.
TBH most plod over here don't actually seem that bothered by the loud pipes typically worn by Harley's. Instead they seem to discriminate more against sports bikes with them, MOT testers will be happy to fail either
Germany does seem to be more strict as I said near the beginning of the thread but they only seem to pick on their own countrymen normally and not tourists.

I am in the same boat as you are. I report to Katterbach in January. I am fixing to ship my bike. There are a bunch of stealers over that way you can find them via the Harley website. I am taking tools and a manual as I do all my own wrenching. Send me a PM, I got some wrenching info you might be interested in

Its crap for college education over there. Just parts and pieces. If he wants to leave his family, it is his choice. I am leaving my family behind for the same exact reason. Your life might be different over in the Airforce, but from the Army side I completely agree with him.

The reason why the polizei doesn't pull US tags over is, that they will have to involve the US military police. Most german cops don't need that hassle with the extra paperwork. Exept for Bavaria. The cops in "Bayern" are the worst asshats in the whole country.
