Don't rule out building an old school mini bike w/ him. All ya need is an old lawn mower and a cheapo frame. Then let him tool around the yard on it for a while.
Good Luck Man. I know that there are some really cheap deals on Craigs List. At least there are in our area. Keep an eye out now around Christmas when people want to make some extra money and it winter, many of the dirt toys go.

I think the memories will be priceless, this is a great age to have a son, he is ready to do some fun stuff.
My main thought on new CRF's, I am not much of a wrench, and I think brand new Honda 4 strokes will be almost bullet proof.
2. Do you have a place where you and he can ride the dirt bikes, plus a way to transport them there?
Around here, unless you have land, off-road riding is almost non-existent, unlike when I was a kid and doing a lot of off-road riding. A mini-bike for him to ride in your yard or nearby fields will get him well on the way to riding. You can even go and watch if you'd like. He will be busy riding and not really caring if you're there or not (at least that's the way I was). Once I turned 14 and got my license, THEN I really enjoyed riding with my Dad.
I live in po dunk south central Iowa, plenty of places to ride trails, no too concerned about that.
I did start looking on Craigslist and found a few, but do I want someone else's problem? I have a plan in place and have about a year to save up. I am planning on getting this stuff next winter.
Thanks to all for your input.

Ok, maybe used is the way to go for now. I found an 07 CRF150F for $1600 on CL and an 07 CRF50F for $800, which is about half of what new would cost. I will keep a close eye on them.
Been there done that! Bought my son a new TTR 125 and I bought a new KLR 250....yeah we rode some but not enought to justify seeling my road bike. There are enough "good" used bikes out there to satisfy the itch. He was 8 as well.....one week he wanted to ride and the next he wanted to play baseball. If the Harley is almost paid for, I would look for a bike for him first, let him ride and enjoy. When your bike is paid for then look for a bike for you., just too many out there. My son simply out grew his bikes. We recently sold his 230 and bought a Suzuki DRZ 400...he's only 15 yrs old. This was the first bike I bought him used, great condition and the seller delivered it from 2 hrs away. People are hurting in this economy and there are some good deals out there! If you can afford to buy him one now go for it... people need Christmas $ .
