I hauled a tool bag/kit around for years and have not used it 1 time since my 81 shovelhead. Knock on wood, I believe the key is to have the bike ready for the trip before it starts.

I carry the Windzone toolkit with me. Hope I don't ever have to use it, but I look at
it like an umbrella.....it rains when I don't have it.

You forgot duct tape? How in the world can you fix anything withot duct tape?
Duct tape and WD-40

If it moves and it's not supposed to, use the duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40

=============

That said I tend to carry too many tools with me. I must remember to re-evaluate them prior to next season.

cell towing card credit card if it breaks chances are you are not going to fix it along side the road
I do have a few tye wraps and a multi purpose tool really don't know why but you have to put something in the fork bag

I've got a buddy that subscribes to the cell phone and credit card only method. He left the resturant the other night and no lights. He came in and was going to call someone to tow his bike. I told him that I had tools and lets check it out. I pulled the seat off, plugged the circuit breaker back in that had vibrated loose and he was on the road in 5 minutes. He told me that me might have to start carrying a small tool kit in his bags now....

Last summer I had a rear tire blowout on an Interstate highway. I thought no problem, I've got HOG roadside assistance and credit cards. WRONG! The towing operator that HOG was sending wanted $300 withdrawn from an ATM and wanted it on the spot when he showed up. AAA coverage, wrong don't have the rider for bikes. Progressive Insurance, wrong they called the same towing operator that wanted $300 on the spot. We were out in the middle of no where and cell phone charge was starting to run down. Only had 1 bar left. So I ended up calling a friend that had a trailer and he came to our rescue at 8 pm and we had the blowout at 3:30 pm.

I would have the following for any future bike trips:
1. Full coverage of HOG Roadside Assistance or AAA.
2. Cash
3. Credit cards.
4 At least 1 fully charged cell phone or bettter yet 2.

Good luck and ride safe!

I carry about 5 or 6 lbs of tools in a zip up bank bag, plus have a saddlebag lid tether with a set of open ended wrenchs in it. I also carry an emergency belt. I can and have tackled a lot of roadside repairs.

IMO, those "pre-made" bike kits are a rip off. You can put together a good kit with good tools for much less. Basically go over you bike and figure out what you need to remove/adjust most things and go buy the tools.
