backfiring..need help
We bought a used 2011 Heritage for my wife from a dealer. The previous owner had the dealership install the Stage 1 kit with air filter and Vance & Hines Staggered pipes. They told us they tuned or flashed the on-board module for the Stage 1 kit.
When we bought the bike, we had the dealer install the Harley Smart Security system (#41000021A). They had to replace the module from what we were told.
They gave us the old module (#69991-11 BCM BASE Y-AXIS) back.
Should they have flashed the new module for the Stage 1 kit that was already installed?
Why does the bike backfire when we decel from speed?
Could it be they forgot to flash the new module after they installed the new module to compensate for the Stage 1 kit?

OK, excuse this dumb question...I've never had or used a security system.
They replaced the EFI? The EFI is what holds the download and controls the way the engine runs. I didn't think they messed with the EFI to put in a security system.
If they did replace the EFI then they have to download again.
If your talking about another "module" then the bike needs a tuner, the stage one harley downlod is EPA approved and doesn't do a whole lot. Chances are, the bike is running to lean.

I had popping on decel, the muffler clamps were not tighten up, the bolts had come to the stops but not applying pressure on the mufflers. Put new clamps on the mufflers, issue gone. FWIW
lloks like this part was a recall on your 2011. Did they charge you for the part?

Either the a/f is too lean(EPA dealer download=total waste of money just to up the rev-limit) or you have an exhaust leak.
I have a fuel pak(pos) and slip ons. The decel pop was so bad I thought I had serious problems. I checked exhaust for leaks(found 1 at head, rear cylinder). Didn't cure the issue but did help somewhat. Contacted Vance and Hines. They gave me new numbers, still had problem, email v&h and got new numbers, still popped, email v&h got new numbers. Went through this about 10 times, started adjusting the map myself. Finally tuned the decel pop out but the bike was a dog. Was getting walked on by stock 88s,but it didn't pop.
Contacted v&h again. Told em their product was junk. Bought a pcv. Installing it sometime next week.
Moral=
could be an exhaust leak and the lean dealer download could be multiplying the effect. Don't bother with the dealer EPA approved junk,or waste your money on a fuel pak. You have a couple options. You can get the bike dyno tuned which will get the most out of your mods even though there aren't many or You can get a tuner with a map already on it from one of the great sponsors here or you can get a tuner with the auto-tune feature and never think about it again.
The auto-tune module will also compensate for new mods, and is constantly monitoring the exhaust and will keep adjusting the tune til it's perfect. This is the best option but also the most expensive. They also have a feature that will change your tune with the flick of a switch. This is the route I am going. I will have 1 tune for city riding, richer to keep bike cooler and adjusted for max power. Then another for highway fuel economy, leaner but that's alright because I will be in motion.
The dealer download is a total waste of money. It's still EPA approved and only adds to the rev limit. A fuel injected bike will compensate for pipes and air cleaner but most carb guy refuse to even learn about fuel injection so they pay twice.
