I have 2 HD Hybrid Helmets, a spoiler half and 3/4. I never use the 3/4. I get buffeting from the little hurricane that, seemingly unique to an SG, comes in at knee level and runs up your body.
Without that wind effect the spoiler would seem to be a very wind efficient helmet, but others may know more about this.
When you try on a helmet it should be snug enough to move the skin on your forehead above your eyebrows, but not so much that you are in discomfort.
For a 3/4 helmet, you may have to flex out the sides on the Fulmer or Bell 500 just enough to slip your ears into the padding while the helmet is rotated a quarter turn forward, then roll it back as you put it on. As you wear the helmet, it gets easier to put on and off as the padding naturally compresses.
I like my Skid Lid DOT 1/2 Helmet. Catches the least amount of air than any DOT 1/2 I've worn.
I did try on a Daytona 1/2 helmet in Arkansas that seemed like it'd catch less wind than the Skid Lid.
My sister-in-law did a faceplant off her Fatboy two years ago wearing a 1/2 helmet. The majority of her injuries were to her face. She has more titanium in her face now than an F1 race car. For me now its the Shoei MultiTech modular.
I like my Bell custom 500 much better than my HD 1/2 helmet.
The Bell is just like my very first Bell helmet, like the look and the fit.
We don't have to wear one here in NH, but I will still wear one if I'm going out of town.
I keep a couple of faceshields in the bags in case I get caught in the rain.
I won't buy a non DOT, what is the point of wearing one? If your going to wear a helmet, it might as well be a DOT.
Arai FF Quantum II Snell & DOT for Cold weather and long (more than two days) X-country jaunts
HJC 3/4 FS-3 Snell & DOT for all around riding.
I'm a firm believer that if I've got to wear a helmet (and in California we do) I might as well wear something with both Snell and DOT Certification. The HJC is actually my second. I hit the "K" rail on the freeway head first after exiting the bike in an entirely involuntary way . . . and walked away without even a headache . . . . sold me!
