I have an Electra and sportster. Sporty has SYN3 and formula+ in it (going to use Amsoil next time) Electra is getting Amsoil in the engine and formula+ in primary/tranny
I run VR-! in the motor with a Harley filter, Rotella-t in the primary, and store brand 70-90 wt gear oil in the trans. I've tried all the top synthetics but being my bike is not a "hot" runner, found it didn't make any difference. Change them all out every 5k and the final cost is an bout $39 for everything. That leaves alot more cash for gas or beer. Synthetic oil will cost close to double that and would take over 100k miles to see if it made anything last longer. But then again maybe 1% of people actually hold onto a bike that long. So if you like to update your bike every few years, use regular oil and have more money to spend on usefull stuff.,,
I ran the syn3 in all the holes for a short time, but neutral was hard to find. When I downshifted I had a little bearing whine from the oil being so thin. I switched over to all redline products and I like them much better then the HD stuff. In my opinion HDMCO ain't an oil company and they get their stuff from who knows where. The redline products are only a couple dollars more and the dealership near me sells them so its no biggie to get so thats what I will keep using. I tried to go with Amsoil but that stuff is way to hard to get
I put Syn 3 in all 3 places during my 2500 mi service. More noise (louder) and didn't seem to shift as smoothly (not that it was difficult).
At 5000 I put Syn3 in the engine and Formula+ in the Trans and Primary and every change since.
I am considering switching to a different brand (or brands). I will keep running Syn in the engine. Probably stick with Formula+ in the trans and primary, at least for one more service.
I tried to go with Amsoil but that stuff is way to hard to get
I purchase my Amsoil at the Harley Davidson dealer here in San Diego. It's on the same shelf/rack as the HD oil and the Syn-3 oil. Ask your HD dealer if they sell it if you want it.
