Well, I think it's probably just that they care and don't want to see you get splattered. It's their way of saying hey, be careful out there riding. Others are maybe just a TAD envious that they don't enjoy one of life's beautiful experiences of being out there in the wind on yer bike. imho that is.....anyway, watch out guys, be careful and don't worry about the naysayers......I may be way off on this, but think not....
I get tired of hearing it. When I hear it I realize, hey- this person doesn't ride so I might want to steer this conversation elswhere.
They usually don't have a clue that this is almost always the first thing non-riders say when the subject comes up, so I try to keep my cool. In their defense- really... what else are they gonna say??? Something like "So what pipes are you running?". "You got a stage one set up?". "You got apes?".
A little piece of most people wants to be out there riding themselves and sometimes they want to come across as cool enough to not make a fool of themselves by talking about aspects of riding they don't know anything about, so they talk about things they do know about... which is that it's dangerous.
I don't mind when people bring up other motorcycle accidents. I think the person sharing the bad news is for the most part genuinely concerned for my well being and just reminding me to be more alert out their on the road.
Its kind of a quick reality check to be more alert cause every cage out there is literally trying to kill you.
However I don't like it when they bring this up in front of my wife or family.
I don't like talking/hearing about MC accidents. But when I do hear about it, I am always curious to know the true cause of the wreck. Sometimes it might be a learning experience. Whenever I do hear about one that could have been avoided at all by the mc rider, I spread the word to my fellow riders( I especially talk to my wife about it.) You never know, that small lesson/knowledge may save their life someday. That's how I look at it, although I do get where some of you are coming from. Some non-riders throw it at you "just because."
Exactly. If I get told about an accident from a non rider my first question is always about what exactly happened and how it happened. It's a learning tool for me. Unfortunately, those telling me the story don't know or even care about the details...they just have an agenda, meaning to get me to stop riding. Probably cause they know I'm having a hell of a lot more fun than they are in life, even with the inherent danger.
I have gotten, "The Talk" about motorcycles from all sorts of people over the years. I have never figured out why. I do not go up to strangers and tell them I know a guy who died in a car accident, but I have had those same strangers come up to me and try and tell me about ther cousins friend who died in a terrible motorcycle accident in 1975 or so. Trying to figure out people and thier motivations is best left to people with more college degrees than I have. I just smile and nod, then ride away.
You can always tell them about the person who choked themself to death while masturbating and they should be more careful in the future and make sure their scarves aren't too tight. It doesn't really bother me if their intentions are good but if they're doing it just to be the *** that likes to be everyone's nanny, then I have no patience to hear it.
this just happened this morning to me. I said back to the guy,"did you hear about that car accident that the driver got killed in" he got my point. I don't want to hear about it. bad karma there
I get told about MC accidents too. By non-riders. Not having the ***** or money to afford a bike, while deep down a great majority of them would love to own one, telling about the accident reinforces their justification why they don't have one. So to make their jelousy less painful. Who cares about them.
On the other hand I'm always interested to know the dynamics of the accident, and 90% of the time it's the rider' fault. Including when cars cut the bike off as the bike approaches an intersection at too high rate of speed for the traffic conditions. That is to remind me that by riding intelligently you can do a lot to reduce the odds against you.

This can be puzzling and upsetting to a new rider. My first thought is if you didn't think it was safe and cared you would say "I wish you would'nt ride, but be careful" But like OP said they don't tell you not to drive. I was mad at my sister for this stuff because " I do own a bike and ride so why would you fill my head with bad thoughts" She and her husband took thier two small children out across the Pacific Ocean on thier 33 foot sailboat.
