Changed my fluids over the weekend. Performed a cold oil check according to the manual prior to my ride to warm it up before changing; and verified the oil level after warming it up from the ride before I pulled the drain plug.
When I refilled the tank, all it would hold was 3 quarts. Started it for a minute to check for leaks and to fill the filter, and it still did not need any added. Rode for a bit and checked again, hot check on the dipstick was full. Did a cold check the following morning, still full. Book says it should take 3.5 quarts. Assuming this is my bike's "normal"...
That last .5 qt isn't in the oil tank when you drain it. You'll never really get all the old oil out, unless you use a scavenger, and even then, you're just circulating the new oil through, and draining the old oil out of the oil return line.
As long as your oil checks show good, I wouldn't worry about it.
This may sound like a silly question, but did you change the filter at the same time? A deal of oil is in the filter and if you don't change it, the refill requires less oil. I try to always change the filter and typically the oil qty is about right, after warm up (and re-filling) the filter... I like put some in it as well as a bit on the o-ring before installing as well.
Did HD change the oil qty with an oil filter change to 3.0 from 2.5 qts.? That's called a wet oil change. If you overhauled the engine and it was dried out real good then the oil fill would be 3.0 qts.
