Is their a name for the fishtail/ape lowered look
Pachuco preceded the cholo style. I remember growing up and seeing the highly creased pants, shirts and polished shoes. Actually damn impressive. The negative connotation now is because of the onion heads that adopted the style. It's a manner of clothing style it's just that the idiots now dressing that way decided to adapt the name. What it isn't is a life style, those should just be called what they are criminals.
After World War II, the Commissary had mass amounts of inventory that had been made exclusively for the soldiers. Since the war was over there was no need to keep supplying the soldiers with the clothing that consisted of button down shirts, t-shirts, under shirts (known as wife-beaters) and tan khakis or chino's. The Commissary needed to move this extra inventory so they sold it dirt cheap to civilians. The majority of buyers were young Mexican-American boys and men who couldnt afford expensive clothing, but instead were able to purchase large amounts of clothing from the Commissary for pennies on the dollar.
With all this supply of khakis (chino's) and t-shirts being sold in huge amounts, the Mexican-American community was overwhelmed with young men in the neighborhood dressing alike. They adopted the style of ironing the crease in their pants to remain a classic and sharp look. Original cholos wore Florsheim's and Stacey Adams on their feet.
As time went on other trends were adopted into that fashion such as the hairnets, bandanas, the wearing of Jerseys and later implementing Denim Jeans and tennis shoes such as **** Cortez, Shell-toe Adidas among other styles to their look.
The original true Cholos of the day wore creased button down shirts, white t-shirts and military creased tan trousers known today as chino's or khakis.
Now days if you asked them why they dress that way they probably couldn't tell ya unless you spoke with an old timer.
One question though. What's an "onion head"?
