I've always thought of the dealer as one of the worst places to go to look for used bike. I just do the same as you, look to see what mods others have done to them.
It's all good. If they keep the price so outrageously high, it will help our bikes keep their value over time. Hopefully.
But I understand the dealer logic. They need to meet a certain new bikes sales budget imposed by the MoCo, so they price their used bikes high to push a buyer towards new bikes. When the budget is reached, and the riding eason at his peak, less new bikes available, and the dealer can ship out the overinflated used-bikes. Win-win. It proves that a Harley bike is an investment.... if you are a dealer. If you are instead a savvy buyer, buy used 3000 miles bike in October from people that bought it new in March the same year and didn't like the Harley thing. Saves you a grand+set up+first service, for a bike that is , in fact, still new.
I was in one of the Austin area HD dealers last week and they had a 2005 Wide Glide priced at $13K. Hell, I paid 5K less than that 2 years ago for an 05 Softail. Some fool and his money will soon part.
sad news is that the poor boy that traded it in probably only got 13 grand tops for trade. Used bikes are a HOT comodity for dealerships right now. Their profit margin is set at a minimum of 5 grand per bike. If you think I'm fibbing, trade in your bike and see what they sell it for!
BTW-stopped in a dealer like you did recently and kicked around the used bikes. Imagine my horroe when I saw a GOLDWING parked in amongst the ElectraGlides! I tortured the saleman on that one for a while. Poor guy finally had to "go on break". I felt bad about it, just a little. Wasn't his decision to put it there. (:
Equal opportunity. Was in the Chattanooga TN Honda shop looking at a helmet, didn't want an over priced HD decal, and they had 2 later model Electra Glides on their floor.

It belonged to the dealerships owner, He bought a new Vic and that dealership wouldn't take the GW in trade.

i was at a dealer yesterday picking up some parts..so i wandered over to the used bike area just to browse (always interesting to see what guys have done to there bikes) so they had a few street glides..a 2010 and a 2011..... so i check the tag on the 2011 it was vivid black and STOCK..i mean so stock i'd bet it was a rental bike. the 2011 had 7,000 miles on it and the price? ? ? ? $19,999
I thought, wait a minute...what does that cost new again...so i walked over to the NEW bike area and guess what $19,499 thats $500 less then the 2011 used? of corse there is freight and prep but ????
You missed the his and hers matching H-D costome value added tax. If you gonna ride, ya got to have skin in the game.
