Default NON heated gear

Morning temps are usually around 35 this time of year. I cannot afford heated gear. My options appear to be chaps or overpants. Better to go with windproof or insulated. Only my legs get chilly. Advice??? Suggestions???

Gusset jeans have velcro fasteners at the bottom of the pant legs to keep air from going up your pant legs. Makes a BIG difference in riding comfort in the cold. Another simple solution is to put a rubber band around each pant leg over your boot.

Are you asking for suggestions?

I ride all winter (except snow times) in the Northeast without any heated/electrical gear. My solution isn't outerwear... it's underwear. Layer, layer, layer.

I'll wear under armour long johns under cotton long johns under my jeans, and just a Columbia rainwear thin outer pants layer on top (for wind). Might seem like a lot to some people, but it's a cheap and easy way for me to go riding whenever I want.

(I use glove liners, upper body thermal layers and a balaclava inside my helmet too.)

Not too many other riders to wave at in January, but that's ok.

I have heated jacket liner and gloves, no way I would ride below about 45-50 w/o the jacket and gloves on, even if I wind up not needing them. Was 34 when I left this morning and had them on and at 70 I needed them and the balaclava on my head. Only had cotton long johns and jeans and wishing I had worn the thinsulate jeans. Layering is a good bet but top layer in cold should be wind resistant, and cotton jeans don't do it. dumb as it may sound my HD rain suit pants are a big help, even been known to put on the jacket.

I rode most of this winter since we didn't have much snow (and the salt afterwards). I used snowpants that I have for snowboarding. Slip right over my regular work pants and are off easily. The material is made for cold and windy temperatures and I never had any issues with my legs getting cold. Make sure to get a pair that has some sort of liner and not just an outer shell.

Thinking about something like this that I could wear over my work clothes and not have to "disassemble" when I get to work. Thoughts?

I usually just add a set of chaps and a hoodie under my leather riding jacket when temps dip. So far I've ridden in weather as low as 24 degrees like that...on the freeways at 70+ MPH on my way to work 45 minutes away.

I bought some Street and Steel insulated chaps from Cycle Gear. I like them a lot. They have snap in quilted liners and have been pretty good in colder weather.

I wear chaps, unlined. Works for me down to 35 or so. Cheap and they don't take up much room to pack. Also easy to remove because I don't need or want the insulation of long johns when I'm at work. When it's below 40 I'll wear a sweat shift under my leather jacket. I have also used my rain gear when I got cold and didn't have my chaps.
Several of the guys I work with wear one piece wind/rain proof riding suits, they like them.

Many good suggestions here. Long underwear helps a lot, as do snow pants and rain pants. I have a pair of chaps (I know, I know, let the flaming begin), but they block the wind and are very easy to put on and take off and fold up half-way decent when not in use. Plus chaps offer decent rain protection as well. I've worn mine in a few heavy rains and they definitely helped.

I have also thought about those Cordura pants on that link, they would probably work rather well too.
