I'm sorry…what makes the owner of this bike think it will fetch $40-60K at an auction? The fact that Jerry Garcia sat his *** on it, and rode it a few times? Maybe I'm just out of touch, but I don't see the owner getting anywhere near that price. There's nothing on the bike that visibly makes it stand out.
This Fender guitar might be worth $15-20K if nobody special had owned it - because it was Eric Clapton's, it was valued at $100-150K by auction "experts." It sold for $959,500.00 and Eric's still alive and has sold a LOT of guitars.

Famous owners are worth a bundle. Jerry garcia's softail will sell for more than $60K, I predict.
But that example would make more sense if they were selling one of Jerry's guitars. Sure an old Fender or Gibson played by someone famous will fetch tons of cash even if it is only worth a few thousand $.
But just because jerry farted on the seat of this Softtail doesnt mean it is worth any more than its actual value. But, you know there are idioots out there who will pay $$ for a famous persons chewed gum.

Clapton's Strat was more than likely signed by him, and verified by all kinds of documentation that it was actually his guitar. I don't see the same thing with this FXST.
The bike isn't registered to Garcia, there are no distinguishing marks, signatures, paint job, or any other "Dead" memorabilia attached to the bike. I really don't see the connection that justifies the steep price tag.
If I were a huge Dead fan, and a collector of their memorabilia, this bike and its documentation wouldn't cut it.

I second this thought.
I need to find someone famous to ride my bike around and sign it and then i can sell it for double what I paid only to buy the same model and re-do everything I did. haha
