I've decided to share my experiences in the last year, perhaps as a resource for others who are new to riding motorcycles.
A little background, I'm 37 years, 6'4 and 260 lbs and am completely new to bikes other than watching people ride on the roads by my house every weekend. I'm no mechanic & prefer to have my cars/truck maintained by Pepboys. And for those that money is a factor, the President wouldnt raise taxes on our household income last year.
I started by taking the MSF Basic course that is held at the Winchester HD Dealership. By the end of the class I felt confident riding in a parking lot and owned a 3/4 helmet & vented gloves. I even had my wife take it later in the year as it was a lot of fun.
During the fall I rented a sportster & trailer for a weekend and practiced the basics. By Sunday I was enjoying riding on short county roads, but realized the sportster was too small for me and the types of riding I was planning. During the winter I rented a road king for the weekend & loved riding it. This January we rented a RK and my wife & I rode 2up for the first time on a 3 hr tour through the valley of fire, which was awesome!
2 months later I purchased a Craig's list special on a 2005 Road King Classic w/ 6k miles & set up for touring. I've taken several 1.5 hr trips as I've gotten to learn the bike and have just completed the Advanced Riders course. Now I'm helping my wife learn how to ride the King and both of us are adjusting the bike to fit me (the previous owner was much smaller).
We've got one 4 hour trip planed this memorial day to Ocean City Md, and we are having a lot of fun enjoying the thrills of riding!
Welcome to the forums and the world of Harley motorcycles! Sounds like you have layed an excellent foundation for decades of wonderful riding adventures!
Ride with a few buddies....a few of us were having pizza last night with the wives in attendance and four of the wives(mine was one of them) decided to do the MSF together this summer. I'm kinda stoked as I've been trying to talk the wife into doing this. I didn't even have to instigate the conversation last night.
