How hot is hot?
What is normal OUTSIDE temps for the heads and the head pipes?
I am looking for people who have used an Infra Red temp gage and shot the jugs and pipes.
Here is what I have. Stage one done with Rush Slip on's (2.0" baffles), V&H Power Duals, High flow A/C (Kury with K&N High 5 filter) and Dynojet Power Vision with map provided my FuelMoto.
I had a few issues when I did the stage one. Main issue was the bike ran like crap with the 2.5" baffles I had in the Rush mufflers. I swapped them out for 2.0" baffles and the bike seems to run GREAT now!
But it still feels extremely HOT when idling, in traffic or slow speed cruising thru the neighborhood.
I used an Infra Red temp gage and checked the right side jugs and head pipes at the heads.
after a 30 minute ride at highway speeds in and 1 minute cool down while idling in the driveway, the front head was 275f and rear was 340f. The head pipes @ the head were both in the 400f range but I am not sure if I was actually hitting the pipes with the temp gun, there is less than 1/2" to aim at between the heat shield and the jug. But that was the highest reading I could get while aiming all around that area.
I did read on here where a few guys did this with an infra red gage and they measured at the base of the spark plugs. This gave them a consistent reading as they were measuring from the same spot every time.
I will try this when I get home this evening.
But does a temp of 340f sound hot for the outside surface of the head? Or is the actual temp inside the head lower?
I am new to power vision and not had time to figure out how to use the monitoring features on it such as head temp's, ect. But I don't want to potentially damage anything while I am learning.
The plan was to buy the Power Vision and have a half way decent tune to start with, learn the software and improve the tune from there. I just want to make sure I have that "half decent tune" to start with and that I am not running to lean and not know it till it's too late.
Sorry for the noob questions and I may be worrying over nothing but any advice is appreciated.
I will get some better temp readings tonight using the base of the spark plugs for consistency and accuracy.
Is there a chart somewhere with "normal" temperatures?
It's a 2012 Ultra Limited.
I did some more reading into the PV manual last night. I will be making a bracket to mount the PV on the bars today and monitor the temp sensors. This tuning stuff is all new to me on a Harley. I void the warranty on just about everything I buy just days after I buy it. This bike is no different but it also runs much hotter than any bike I ever owned.
So with the info I have gathered over the last day, I guess it is best if I just get up to speed with the PV before I do any more riding. I was just hoping to find someone else who measured external temps and compared them with readings from the internal sensors.
I did speak with Jamie @ Fuelmoto yesterday and he said temps will read much higher on the outside of the heads, specially the rear jug. He has seen them close to 400f before and all was fine.
Not sure if I could live with 400f, that sounds damn high. So If I can verify that 350f is safe, I will be happy for now untill I can fine tune the PV map then richen it up some and see if that cools things down a little.
I could care less what fuel mialage I get or how fast it goes, the heat is my main concern right now and I know it can be tamed to an acceptable level.
