Default intake leak

I took my 01' Road King in for a rear tire and service. It was running great but wanted to get it ready for this summer. i got it back and it cut out on the freeway on the way home. The next week was a run so I pulled it out and it was extremely hard to start and backfired. During the run it reeked of fuel, backfired on starts and ran like a toad. The dealer told me this was an intake leak. I responded that I was not surprised I had an intake leak after the backfiring but that this would not make it run rich. Am I wrong? They put new seals in and I am picking it up on Tue. I just would like to know if I should trust them or not. My bike ran great and within one mile of this service it turned to ****. I smell something dirty but would like to ask for another opinion. Thanks. Mike in CA.

Intake leaks will cause backfiring for sure. I agree, how can getting more air into the fuel mixture make it run rich? Doesn't seem logical to me. Did you check the plugs before you took it to the dealer?

No But the service included new plugs. They pulled them and they looked ok but the pipes were black inside. Really bad. I think they are trying to cover themselves for not test riding it afterwards. The writer also tried to sell me a stater job @ $600 when i took it in for the service. I declined and a leaky stater is not in their system. the Mgr saw this and i think he is trying to make it good. I just want it back right and think i will go elsewhere in the future. I like honesty NO BS, and am willing to spend. I told the writer "don't **** down my back and tell me it's raining" He looked like he was gonna cry! Thanks for the response!
