I recently put on a set of "broken wings" on my vest... I had heard that today folks believe that, "After you crash....you've earned 'em. "...
I felt that I earned them because of all of the crashes that I had done in my early years of riding... I had been hospitalized with a concussion, received stitches and had road rash that took six months to heal...
A friend of mine wrote to me, "Actually what the broken wings signified at one time is not only that you have been down on your ride but also you received broken bones as a result. I dont know if scratches, stitches, road rash, and NO broken bones warrentsanyone to wear the broken wings".
What does the "broken wings" represent in todays motorcycle world? Is he correct that you can only wear the broken wings if you broke bones?
I thought I earned mine just thru road rash......got my patch low on back of vest....as close as I could get to where I got most of the rash......my ****
I have been wearing my Broken wings for about 4 years now, low on my cutoff as you do..I have had 3-4 different people walk up and ask me how I earned my broken wings, told them about a couple of crashes and the last one and they just said ok, last time I was asked about it I asked the Guy why he asked me that, he said, "to many guys wearing it that do not deserve it" A crash is a crash, the word means what it says, you crashed, if you were lucky enough to get away without any broken bones then good for you. I say wear it if you feel you earned it.. if you just fell down while pulling out of a parking lot, maybe not, but then if you broke your arm doing that?? you would?? Who knows, when I see somebody wearing it I just figer he crashed, I don't ask..Hell I see guys bikes with Ride to live, live to ride all over it and they don't do 2,000 miles a year..talk about a joke!!
I have heard or read ALL sorts of stuff, the Old Timers around here say it requires Hospitalization, even if just Emergency Room, and Road Rash don't qualify. Just another thing that has been watered down over the years. To me, it's a decision, like wearing a Helmet, if you dropped yer Scoot, and it was moving, who am I to say ya don't deserve it? But then again, this patch, like all things Scooter related, has been over run by Posers and RUBS.

One thing that I noticed about the Harley Davidson broken wings... is that the wings are not actually broken... the feathers are all roughed up and one feather is detached... The old broken wings that I remember had one of the feathers actually detatched from the rest of the wing... Maybe a sign of the times...
