I don't believe wind chill has an effect on freezing water.

The windchill will have little affect on freezing water. And when it comes down it it, if it is YOUR comfort you are thinking about......You will create your OWN windchill the instant you start moving. So waiting for the windchill to get about 32 is a complete waste of time. Once you hit 45 MPH, even with an air temp of 55 degrees, it will feel like 33 to you, the rider.

True, water will not freeze until the actual air temperature is at the freezing point, no matter what the 'wind chill temperature' might show.

BTW, here is a fun little Java Script"Wind Chill Calculator" from the National Weather Service webpage.

If there is no wind, there is no wind chill. Once you start moving and making artificial wind you will now have wind chill. That has nothing to do with thatlittle trickleof water running across the road.

Still, be extra cautious in curves that are largely in shadow. Sometimes ice will remain in those areas long after the temp has gone above 32 degrees.

I don't know, but here is the actual formula for calculating wind chill.

Might make sense to you, but it looks like Greek to me. LoL..

I believe most of the official weather stations go off the National Weather Service calculation.

But then again, I don't know... [8D]

"The windchill temperature is calculated using the following formula:

Windchill (ÂşF) = 35.74 + 0.6215T - 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16)

Where: T = Air Temperature (F)
V = Wind Speed (mph)
^ = raised to a power (exponential)

Windchill Temperature is only defined for temperatures at or below 50 degrees F and wind speeds above 3 mph. Bright sunshine may increase the windchill temperature by 10 to 18 degrees F."
