What would it take HD to perform factory service, FREE of CHARGE...say for the first 2 years or 15k miles, whichever comes first?
More so on the idea like some car manufacturers, offers free maintenance for the 1st 4 years or 50k miles...
Probably might drive the cost of the bike but really, what's the risk for HD? On a typical 1k, 5k or even 10k service, shop supplies are probably around $100, it's the labor hours that jacks up the price, like an average 1k service is around $350 and so on...
Oh boy. Drop my bike off for the free service at the dealership and if I'm lucky I'll get it back in 3 weeks. No thanks. I prefer to do as much of my own work as possible. It's done right and I don't have to call daily to be lied to about when my bike will be ready. And believe me it isn't free. They'd just roll it over into increased MSRP.
At $90 an hour the service dept is probably second only to the apparel dept as a dealers biggest cash cow.
I honestly don't know how people afford to take their bikes and cages to dealers for service, especially the routine stuff. Cost is just one reason I like to do my own work (where possible). There's the missing bolts, loose screws and generally sloppy work you get for $90 an hour.
Which leads me to one of my favorite movie quotes:
"what one man can do another can do" Anthony Hopkins from The Edge.
Just my $0.02 if it hadn't been brought up yet...

Hd would raise the price of the bikes or change the maintenance schedule.I'm sure the dealers would complain.
My wifes Mini Cooper has the 3 year free maintenance.Guess when the first scheduled oil change is...........15,000 miles!I changed the oil at 1K and going to split the 15k intervals.
