Default HD Factory Service

Just my $0.02 if it hadn't been brought up yet...

What would it take HD to perform factory service, FREE of CHARGE...say for the first 2 years or 15k miles, whichever comes first?

More so on the idea like some car manufacturers, offers free maintenance for the 1st 4 years or 50k miles...

Probably might drive the cost of the bike but really, what's the risk for HD? On a typical 1k, 5k or even 10k service, shop supplies are probably around $100, it's the labor hours that jacks up the price, like an average 1k service is around $350 and so on...

Anyway...just a thought...

I don't think they do it because there's no competition, for the most part.

No one will say to themselves, "I'll be the 'brand X' instead of the Harley because of the free maintenance".

Oh boy. Drop my bike off for the free service at the dealership and if I'm lucky I'll get it back in 3 weeks. No thanks. I prefer to do as much of my own work as possible. It's done right and I don't have to call daily to be lied to about when my bike will be ready. And believe me it isn't free. They'd just roll it over into increased MSRP.

At $90 an hour the service dept is probably second only to the apparel dept as a dealers biggest cash cow.

I honestly don't know how people afford to take their bikes and cages to dealers for service, especially the routine stuff. Cost is just one reason I like to do my own work (where possible). There's the missing bolts, loose screws and generally sloppy work you get for $90 an hour.

Which leads me to one of my favorite movie quotes:

"what one man can do another can do" Anthony Hopkins from The Edge.

Hd would raise the price of the bikes or change the maintenance schedule.I'm sure the dealers would complain.

My wifes Mini Cooper has the 3 year free maintenance.Guess when the first scheduled oil change is...........15,000 miles!I changed the oil at 1K and going to split the 15k intervals.

I've read in here a bunch of times that some members get there dealer to add free 1k and 5k service's when they do the deal.

Just have to talk about it..

They do a crappy job when we are actually pay them to do it. Imagine how well they'll do it if we're not directly paying them.

I do all of my own servicing because nobody cares more about my bike than I do.
