My current bike I easily pump close to 1k into it just getting it sorted out. IF I pull the cord & buy one of the 2013's I will not mess with the motor / drive train at all.
It's DEFINITELY excessive, as far as I'm concerned. He's got an S&S 124 with all kinds of other really nasty **** on it - blower, exhaust, hd tranny, etc.. It's loud & fast as hell and he gets about 100 miles to the tank.
Here's the thing, though. It breaks down (big time) at least once a season! 2 years ago he tore the stock tranny out of it because the motor had so much power. Last year he blew his motor just because he was beating the hell out of it. This spring is when he got the 124 - we rode 2 weeks ago, stopped at a convenience store and the damn thing wouldn't start - bad starter out of nowhere.
IDK, I've never really been a motor head, but IMO he turned a real nice bike into something that is only really practical for bar hopping or a getting traffic fines. But, I guess we all have our vices/obsessions.
Dealership near me had a bike like that, real nice looking bike good paint job loads of mods selling for a reasonable price, I asked one of the dealers about it, he said they'd sold it to 3 different owners in as many years they all had trouble with it, mainly as I recall with the clutch and gearbox.
Just bought a set of stock mufflers and put them on yesterday, I can now hear the stereo and no more ringing ears by the time I get to work.
The only mods done to my EGC are a shorter sheild and a dynojet kit to run better. The only other thing planned is a set of gear driven cams for some piece of mind.
If I want to drive fast I have a 92 ZX11 Ninja to scratch that itch
I have a buddy who dumped about 9G's into a 2008 Street Glide. It got to a point he was afraid to park it anywhere for the fear something would happen to it. He got bored and sold it. He realized he did all the mods trying to keep up with the Jones' as it were. He started to miss riding so about 3 months ago he bought a new Road King. He did a basic Stage 1 to it along with just a few other simple farkle mods making it what he wants it to be and loves it. He now wears a grin I've never seen before. Go figure!!!
As for me, I have a simpler Stage 1 with pipes that are just a tad bit louder tan stock. Will I go back.... I don' think so...
.
If I had to to it all over again, I would have probably stayed with my stock exhaust. However, I would have still installed the Stage I and SERT. As far as engine mods, anything past a cam and some head work just kills your reliability. Like an earlier post alluded to, if you want to go fast, buy a GSXR or something like that.
My Sporty had 1 3/4" open straights.
My RK came completely stock, it now has a Stage I with Bub 7 True duals.
I miss the Sporty's sound, and yes it was used for more than short rides. So no, I wouldn't ever go back to stock. For mods I like to keep my bike reliable and rideable on long rides.
