Very easy to find a good Harley for $10K or less - even if you only look at dealerships. Cheaper than that buying from individuals. Last guy I know who bought from an individual got a very nice evo Road King f0r $6K - you might not match that, but there are plenty of good Harleys available.

Best advice in the thread. Buy what YOU want the first time. I bought an '02 Road King Classic as my first bike and 17K miles and a year and a half later, I couldn't be more happy with my choice.

Don't 'wait' until fall, but search from now until you find the one. It takes patience, but the pay off can be great.
I try to check the local craigslist every other day at the most. Just keep your eyes open...

For your first REAL bike, you should start with a sporty.

Traded an 07 VStar650 for an 09 RK standard a year ago. Night and Day comparison. If you can, find an 09 frame and priced within your budget. With my trade, under $12K OTD in Los Angeles.

I agree with finding a dealer that will let you test ride different models to get a feel for what you want. Also having the six speed tranny is a major plus if you plan on doing a lot of highway riding.
