Profiling
There have been a couple stops here in Texas (DFW area and Corpus Christi area) recently of patch holders by officers for no reason whatsoever - no speeding, no weaving, no failure to signal - no reason at all, except the officer decided, either on his own or by direction, that wearing a patch meant he could stop the rider. Once the stop was made the riders showed their DL, and as is law in TX, their Concealed Carry permit. In one case the officer confiscated the firearm and permit because the rider "was a member of a gang, and therefore not allowed to have a CC permit." In the other case the rider had his permit, but wasn't carrying so the officer took the permit for the same reason.
Call it what you will, slippery slope, camel's nose under the tent, whatever, but remember that government never stops moving the goal. If this type stop becomes common, they will figure out a further step, and take it, and then another and another, ad nauseum.
I doubt the average street officer decided on this policy. Usually they get told what to do by some higher up who works to increase the department budget, and especially their own power. It is up to us riders to stand together and stop this crap in its tracks. If you are not a member of your local MRO, be that a CoC, US Defenders, ABATE, AMA, etc. you are part of the problem. Get off your tail and be part of the solution.
First they came for the 1%ers and I wasn't one so I didn't speak out. Next they came for the outlaw clubs, and I wasn't one of those, either. Then they came for the Family Clubs, but that wasn't me, either. Finally, they came for the independents, and there was no one left to speak for me.
one week they are checking every truck for proper brakes and tail-lights. maybe next week every van with 10 people in it for illiegals. then they may pull over every vehicle with dark tinted windows. sooner or later, they are going to get around to pulling over bikers. hell, the game wardens are writing people up for d.w.i. in their boats. the border patrol is everywhere too--and you know they are profiling every vehicle they see.
best to maintain a low profile down here these days. loud pipes and colors are going to get you pulled over.
He insisted I should have my registration receipt in my wallet. Ive only lived in TX for about 55 years and I can honestly say Ive never ever heard anyone to carry the receipt. Nothing on my bike was out of compliance. All my paperwork is perfect. 20 Minutes later he comes out of his squad car and hands me my DL, Insurance and says
"Got you in the data base, I'm letting you off with a warning but ... I gotta ask you this... are you a real biker?"
Bit my lip... really wanted to ask him what his HDforums name is.
Already in Bexar County you cannot refuse a breath test and keep your DL regardless of what kind of vehicle you are driving. They will get an unconstitutional (IMO) JP search warrant to draw your blood if you refuse the breathalyzer. You are held in custody and your vehicle impounded while you wait for all this chit to take place based on pretty flimsy probable cause. If you pass the blood test you can pay to get your vehicle out of the impound lot if you have someone to drive it because your license has been suspended for refusing the breathalyzer.
More and more Americans are willing to give up their rights so they can feel safer. Whether it is fear of terrorists, drunk drivers, motorcycle club members or whatever else this whole fear and loss of rights is really bothering me.
I believe in the right to OWN and POSSESS firearms but I am suspicious that all these people lining up to submit to the state to get a concealed carry permit are scared of something. And by registering with the state it is not the government they are afraid of.
As Pogo said "we have met the enemy and it is us".
Sorry about the rant. I know many here do not feel as I do so I hope I have not offended anyone. And if I have...

There's thousands of dollars to be made with arrests and tickets- the whole criminal justice machine depends on it-racketeering at it's finest by the smiling armed cashiers with badges.
The CoC should look into the Washington State US Defenders model..
