I read on one of these forums that police wanted to know if they had to wait for the light to go off before they could pursue some one. The answer that came back was "no they could start the bike before the light went off". I usually wait for my light to go off but I have started it before the light has gone off with no problems....

the only issue i've ever had was on my 07. a couple of times i was in too much of a hurry and hit the start switch immediately after hitting the run switch. i didn't give the computer time to normalize and ended up with a speedometer that read i was doing 35 when i was passing people on the highway. was only temporary, was back to normal the next time i started the bike.
Working with IT every day, I've learned it's best to let a computer boot up and check itself out before making it do any work. Sometimes if things happen in an order the computer isn't expecting, you get some weird results, and sometimes things don't get started that should.
I bought an '04 softail standard about 2 years ago and was told the same thing , so I waited 'til it went out , started it and away I went , it was fine until I cracked on the throttle , engine light comes back on and stays on 'til I back off and just cruise .
Damn thing runs great and pulls hard 3rd through 5th , just that pesky little engine light keeps coming on ! lol

it doesn't need a few seconds. the fuel lines are under constant pressure, once the power is turned on, it shouldn't take more than 1/2 sec to repressurize the system. if it does, then you have a leak somewhere.
