Default Torkin screws

I want to adjust my clutch and primary chain this weekend. I have had a heck of a time finding an inch pound tork wrench reasonably priced. Does everybody tighten the screws on the covers with a tork wrench or can I get it done without? As long as I am careful not to break the screws, is it that critical? Please dont laugh. [sm=laughat.gif]The weather is starting to look pretty good, and Im seeing a lot of bikes coming out. I want to be one of them, but I need tomake the adjustments. [sm=smiley16.gif]

I got a inch pounder off Pit Posse on ebay for $35 that I use....having said that, I can honestly say that I have yet to torque the screws on the derby cover. I just do it by feel. I use the torque wrenches for all the major components but didn't want to stip anything out.

The inspection covers on the clutch and primary chain adjustment aren't all that critical if you're careful not to overtighten. As long as you're using a standard allen wrench, not one of the long ones, you should be able to snug up the screws without damage. If you're planning to do regular work on your Harley, however, $60-$80 is a cheap investment for a torque wrench compared to the $300-500 for a primary cover.

Breaking screws is the least of your worries. The possibility of stripping out the threads on the primary cover is one major reason to use a torque wrench. The other is that you should follow the tightening sequence in the harley service manual in order to reduce the chance of warping the covers. Use locktite blue to keep the screws from backing out.

I never use a torque wrench for the inspection covers. Just snug them a bit. Mine have been off and one for years with no problems. No Loctite for me, thank you. I don't want to use it something that is gonna be coming off and going on frequently. I haven't lost a screw yet by not using Loctite.

However, every home wrench should have a torque wrench or two. The inch pound one from Harbor Freight is a good piece. You can catch them on sale for about 20 bucks.

I have the Craftsman microtork inch pounds. I think I spent around 75 bucks for it. I use the sh** out of it for the bikes and cars. After a few cold ones it seems I loose all feel for snug vs. snap.

Good tool to have in your box.

Well, I found an inch lb tork wrench at Harbor Freight tools. $28.00 I feel better about the job now. I got the fluids changed, but according to the service manuel, it says to adjust the primary chain from the inspection cover opening. YEA RIGHT! I could barley see the darn top part of the chain no less measure or adjust it. It looks like Ill have to remove the whole primary cover. The Arlen Ness Big Sucker AC I installed today is pretty cool though. [sm=happy046.gif]

I bought one from Harbor Freight a few years back and well I got what I paid for. I am in the habit of excercising the wrench before using it on my Harley, well I put it on a nut onone of mysons old bikes and the wrench would not click no matter how hard I pulled on it.

Needless to say I threw it in the trash and went out and bought the Craftsman inch/pounds and foot/pounds torque wrenches. I shoould have known better all of my other tools are Craftsman and I have never had any complaints about them.
