His intention was not to kill 5 people. People should be punished based on their intentions not people's emotional response. He was negligent for not properly caring for his diabetes. Those who think someone should be hung by their ***** for something that was unintentional makes me sick.
Driving a vehicle is a responsibility. If he knew not eating would screw him up and he didn't eat while continueing to drive he is responsible. At least he got some punishment. Guy exiting freeway in SUV blew stop sign and t-boned my dad coming across the overpass on his bike a little over a year ago. He died on scene. Driver of SUV plea bargained down from carless driving causing death to careless driving causing injury. Rural area of CO don't get many cases. Just wanted this one as a win for the DA I guess. $1000 fine, around 140 hours community service, and a letter of apology to family. Motorcyclist don't count as people...didn't anyone tell you?

But it was his intention if he knew not taking care of a medical condition would screw with him.
Do you really frggen think he would have skipped lunch if he thought it could somehow end up killing 5 people. Give me a friggen break. It was a mistake, crap happens.
Would I be pissed if it was my family? Hell yeah but eventually I would probably see it in my heart to forgive him.
He could have taken the easy way out and pleaded not guilty due to medical conditions and let the courts decide. At least he was honorable enough to take responsibility for his actions.

Of course he KNEW it COULD happen. That is the problem. I see no difference between this circumstance and drunk driving. He knew the risks and still did it. Period.
Diabetics know what they have to do to manage their condition. He knew what could happen if he didn't eat, he knew his blood sugar levels would go ape$hit...he knew it could and would lead to an altered mental status and yet he still made the conscience decision to drive.
Did he murder them? No.
Does he deserve more that a year of jail time for his negligence? HELL YES.
*And this opinion comes from years for running Fire Department calls for motor vehicle accidents where too many times it turned out to be caused by diabetic complications.
He KILLED 5 Human beings for God's sake!

Reason: Additional comment.
Having read the additional info on his poor driving record my opinion has changed. A guy with that many tickets is either a crap driver or does not give a S#%*. Either way he deserves to spend time. If I had to bury a child for someone else's negligence I could not forgive.
my fatherinlaw is diabetic. about 12 years ago, he skipped a meal knowing he had to eat. and went into insulin shock. ended up driving a couple hours out of the way and hitting 2 different cars head on.. he doesn't remember anything after leaving my wifes house, till he woke up in the hospital several hours later. he spent 5 years in hospital bed and a wheelchair. his license was suspended for 6 years till he was cleared by a doctor. no one was killed, but his insurance company paid out thousands. i still get scared when i see him driving.
