My experience by way of contrast - I bought a '99 FXDX brand new in July 2000. Since then I've bored it to 95", swapped the carb out for a mikuni, and done the cams (gear drive to lose the tensioners), pipes and filters. I have had the primary gasket leak in the first 500 miles and a lifter go at 15,000 miles - apart from that no problems. I also have an '08 Road King and have bored it to 107" and done cams, pipes and filters, all thats happened on this one is that I had to replace a shock that leaked oil.
Compared to the Japanese bikes I used to ride that's superior reliability. I'm sure my experience is more representative of other riders experience.
Well, to the original poster.
Talk to and more importantly listen to the other bob owners out there for their experiences, real world experience beats theory and assumptions all day long.
Your right to be concerned and to come here and ask potentially hundreds of Bob owners is a great idea, good luck with your decision.
Have you driven any Harleys yet?
Wait until you do, unless you have, the difference from your 92 Honda is going to make you very happy.
Yep my tensioners wore out! at 76,000 miles and the cam bearings were bad too! but consider the amount of miles on the bike! i forgot to add it was a 1999 ultra.

Yeah I saw that article just before I bought my FLHTC a month ago. If you didn't notice there is a "solution" for every one of those issue listed. That is for a price from the right 3rd party vendor.
Don't believe evry thing you read. IMO. Research on forum like this is far more valuable then most of the crap you find on the internet these days.
Buy the bike you want, if you have doubts about it buy an extended warranty then you'll be at least partially covered.

Lump
I haven't changed my mind-it's going to be a 2013 Fat Bob.
I have to admit that I haven't had the pleasure of riding a Harley yet, but I just signed up for a test ride at a nearby dealer. Looking forward to it!
+1 on FatBob123. I bought a used '08 last spring and absolutely love it!! To me, the Fat Bob handles better than any cruiser out there. I like the fat front tire, I feel glued to the road. I'm a big guy so I don't have any trouble getting it to lean over like some people complain about with fatter tires. Don't listen to all the opinions out there, yours is the only one that matters. I'm sure Harley has motors that fail but it's not like they're laying all over the road or no one would own one. Just buy it and smile.
