Cam Tension Question
http://blog.jpcycles.com/2012/11/i-l...ust-know-this/
I do all the maintenance on my motorcycles myself. However, being this one has only been in my possession for about 4 months now, I've only torn about 1/2 of it apart. But I much rather enjoy riding it than finding out it's inner workings. I haven't had a chance to really tear into the engine, reason being there's been no issues with it or need to. The only thing I've done to the engine was change the oil/filter, change the air filter, and change/gap the plugs. The transmission, I just adjusted the clutch run out, and swapped the gear oil. The bike runs excellent.
Anyhow, I spent all day searching on what that link above covers. I'm really starting to think that my little 883 engine isn't affected. But, before I take it all apart and find out it is totally different than what that article is talking about, I figured I'd just ask this question, since no one has asked it (at least from spending a couple hours on this site and Google).
So here's the question of the day: Is the 883 Sportster engine affected by plastic spring loaded cam chain tensioners?
Now to take the mystery out of it all... how do the cams work in the 883? Is it gear driven or is it chain driven? Or? Or should I just spend all night with some ratchets and other tools taking my innocent little 883 apart just to answer my question?
Anyhow, I thank you for answering my question. I had a feeling it was gear driven, but wasn't sure.
I sure do love this bike more... seems like a lot less work. Before this, I had a little Kawasaki Ninja 250R, and I had to adjust the valves almost every 8k miles, along with using my manometer to balance the carbs, along with a ton of other stuff. I kind of miss that bike, modded it up the way I wanted, and got 90 mpg. But I like the Harley better... it's a head turner.

Thanks again!
