I do, but mine is the old push button type, not proximity

i don't know squat about the older, push button style fobs. sorry..... but what i do know is that the procedure above for the proximity won't work with it, but what the correct procedure is.... ?

No idea, it's no biggie to swap batteries every 6 months just to be sure

I changed the battery in my FOB a few weeks ago. Didn't need to go to the dealer and didn't come across that problem your having. Always keep a spare battery in your bag in case you're on the road in the middle of no where and the battery goes dead.
