Closest comparative word I can give you (from my 3 decades in clubs) is think of "courtesy" when you hear a patch talk about "respect". If your neighbor suddenly began mocking your family, lifestyle, your clothes, your character, your kids, etc would you simply turn the other cheek or would you feel disrespected? Some would some would simply ignore them.

I think you'd find many of us old timers agreeing with your defintion of Respect.
You earn respect, you deserve courtesy.
Good post...
i "think" when you hear soemone discuss the term "respect" in the mc world, its mainly boils down to be honest when you talk to them, and treat them and whats theres as you would have them treat you and yours. basicly as the saying goes, "give respect, get respect". honestly if more people followed that logic there would be less need for so much drama and BS.
What you have to realize is (and it sounds cliche) but if you don't understand then you'll never understand. I'm not from an MC but a similar culture and people often ask why I only wear certain colors or devote so much time or money into what they consider a "hobby." Well, it's a "hobby" to you, it's a lifestyle to me. It's what I DO. It's who I AM. It doesn't make you wrong because that's not your lifestye, but it doesn't make me wrong because it it.
These guys confuse respect with fear. Just because people avoid you doesn't mean they respect you. I respect no man for the colors he wears on his cut. He's no different than any other joe on a bike to me.
The people who talk about "respect" probably never got much respect in real life (probably due to low intelligence or poor social skills) so now are looking for it in their fantasy "biker" life.
