They call 'em APE hangers for a reason. Following a guy with apes trying to negotiate a twisty mountain road is truly a treat.

I got to sit on a Softail Custom with 16" apes to see what all the fuss was about. I did not like them near as well as my buckhorns. No way I could see myself riding down the hiway with my arms that high grabbing all the wind and bugs. They just do not make any sense to me, but I am sure they are the best thing for many. The guy that owned the bike I sat on loved them. At 72 years old buckhorns fit me like a nice glove. But then I have been riding with them for 28 years.

I still have the stock buckhorns on my 1986 FXSTC. From what I've read here, the newer buckhorns were changed and many didn't find them as comfortable as the older ones.
