"I for one am glad Harley is stepping up to the plate and producing a competitive bike"
Competitive against WHAT exactly? Other cruiser styled bikes? It sure isn't any competition for serious sport bikes. Is the thing designed to compete exclusively in the european market?
If they get 90 hp and 80 ft lbs of torque, that is equal to my ZRX1100, and it may be a bit lighter. To answer you question "Competitive against WHAT exactly?" It is the street tracker/fighter craze and if harley gets into it with the real thing, they can get a large part of the market. Of course, a lot of folks would like for Harley to stay stagnet and even lose market share for the sake of tradition and "Life style". these folks get what they deserve, 30 yr old tech and a weaker motor company, but they don't care, they still have their aircooled tractor.
Don't misunderstand me, I LOVE my sportster, but I also LOVE the V-Rod and I REALLY LOVE this new street tracker, and Harley has to deal with the EPA and liquid cooling, or lighter weight with leaner air/fuel is the only way.
Some day in the not to distant future, the air cooled twin cam etc. will be a thing of the past, you need to learn to deal with it.

It could be viewed as competition to the Ducati Monster and other naked sporty bikes. If they're going to be serious about it they're going to have to drop a 100lbs off the bike or more. The XR should have plenty of power but the dryweight on a Sportster is ~560lbs while a Monster has a claimed dry weight of 400lbs.
Why do people get all pissy when HD tries something new? Or again..
If they made a full fairing all out 4 cylinder race bike I'd be IN.
HD makes apaisley rain jacket with ostrich rufflesand thats ok, but an updated dirt bike you can ride on the street...oh thats bad!!
I don't get it.
lp
That ain't no dirt bike...not even an adventure bike...maybe a dirt tracker at best. With that said, it has nothing to do with HD trying something new...just don't like it.
Don't like the paisley rain jacket with ostrich ruffles either, but hey...if that's your think, more power to ya.
I like the bike. It would be a good one for my son. It reminds me of the old XR750. At my age, I remember watching Evel Knievel jumping stuff on the Wide World of Sports. He sure as heck didn't do it on an ElectraGlide.
It is hard to understand Harley's release to the Euro's prior to a US release of this bike. Its also hard to swallow the fact the bike was, and I quote "Ergonomics designed aroundaverage height European customer" but anyway.
There's a new video up for the bike now atwww.xrdna.comYou need to choose UK English for the site, as there is no option for US english :P
Maybe it's a niche market, and they may not sell 100's of thousands of these, but to me nothing would be sweeter then owning a bike with so much heritage as this one represents. If it holds true to its handling claims, with some engine mods, and some of Storz accessories, this bike would be in a class of it's own. Not to mention would give the rice rockets a run for their money on the back roads, and how could that be a bad thing
the word is the xr1200 will be released in europe in 07 and in the states in 08 and the nightster will be released in europe in 08
And that 'word' would be coming from where? The European H-D sites still refer to this as a prototype, with no sugggestion that H-D is going to actually build it anytime soon.
As to the Nightster, it's no more than a styling exercise: a lowered 'L' model with blacked-out rims, smaller fenders, different powder coat on the engine, a few drilled-out bits, and some rubber booties. With a more shallow lean angle than an Ultra, it's hardly the bike to tear around the twisty two-lanes and roundabouts in most European countries.
that word would be coming from rider magazine .some of us still read news print
