Never heard the sword thing before. As I went through this thread and saw the horse comments I was thinking these folks don't own or have never ridden horses. If your horse won't stand for mounting from either side, dismounting off the rear or over the neck, you will get hurt eventually. that being said I'm short, must get on the low side unless on the center stand then i can use the floor boards and get on either side.
Horses don't care and neither does the bike! I prefer the right as my foot is already at the needed height to clear the seat and it is all down hill from there, BTW I have the rider back rest.
When I parked in DC, sometimes you'll get a fart-knocker that parks close to on top of your bike, so you can't get beside it to mount from the left, so you just hop on from the right.
Most times, though, I get on from the right. The fork lock is on that side, so I walk to that side to unlock the forks so I don't have to bend over the bike to unlock. There are times I dismount on the right, too. Just really depends on how lazy I feel.

I have a short leg...
(HAAHAAA! I bet you thought I was gonna say something else!)
Anyway, because an accident left me with about 3/4" length gone from my right leg, I cannot stretch my left leg to mount from 'curb side'. So, it's always from the left for me.
