If I hold on too tight. Then I just hit the cruise and shake it out.

I've had this problem when I start riding after a winter off the bike. I suspect I'm gripping a bit too hard or I'm not used to holding the grips after not doing so for a few months.

Otherwise, I've had thumb numbness due to poorly fitted gloves. I have long thumbs for the size of my hands (or so glove makers seem to think).

Just this year I finally began using the throttle lock to ease the strain on the right hand. I set the lock just tight enough to counteract the return springs, but loose enough to still turn easily.

Never happened on my Harley but it was routine on my ST1300. I think it had to do with the pullback on the handlebars, since on the ST I had to lean forward a bit and was putting pressure on the meaty section of my palm. Not so with the RG. Padded gloves and throttleboss help.

I have the same issue too but it affects my whole right hand. I want to get a crampbuster and throttle lock but haven't done it yet.

For me it HAS TO BE a nerve thing, i remember this happening when I was much younger riding long distance on my Yamaha XS 750D, my whole right hand would go numb. I was young, in my 20's and pretty sure I didn't have any circulation issues. After 20 years of not riding and buying my 1st HD last year, I noticed it start to happen again. It really sucks to, but I traded the Softail for a FLHTK that has cruise, and that really helps.
I just wish it wouldn't happen at all.....
But to the OP, you're not alone man, sorry.

I've had my right hand get so numb that I couldn't feel the turn signal switch and had to look at my hand to make sure of what my thumb was doing. I now use the thumb lock. Just tighten it enough to take the tension off the return cable.

When I rented an EG I fell in love with the cruise control.

Never. Maybe relax on The death grip a little.

I've wondered if it was a nerve or circulation thing as well but not sure

The crampbuster & gel gloves worked for me. Wish I had known about the crampbuster on my last bike

I would bet that riding with your arms above your heart makes it harder to get good circulation in the hands. The longer you're in that position, the greater chance of the hands/arms going numb. The vibration and cold air would likely increase this effect. I would also bet that the physical conditioning of the individual contributes to how long you can ride in that position.
