Default disconnected odometer functionality question

hi,

a regional manager at an auto glass company I used to work for back in 2003 was a self proclaimed harley mechanic that proclaimed to have worked out of his garage. (he actually may have done some work for some people, that's really neither here nor there) anyway, he told me that he used to disconnect the odometers to keep the shown mileage down so he could get more money when he sold his own bikes.

he said he tried it on his wife's minivan and screwed it up, but it was doable on bikes. is it still doable on bikes ? in particular say a 2008-2013 fat bob. I ask because some folks actually do ride 500 miles a year, but I don't want to end up buying one that says 2,500 miles and think I may be getting a good deal when it actually has 25,000 miles on it.

thanks for any input...

2008 - 2013 the miles are logged to the ecm. Disconnecting the speedo will not keep miles from logging.

No,

The speedometer, self-cancelling turn signals, and most importantly the ECm all take data from speed sensor (which is what gives data to you odometer). It would likely run, but thre awould be a myriad of issues.

Nothing is impossible if someone really wants to do something like that, they'll find a way.

However, on our bikes the mileage is stored both in the speedo & the ECM. If the miles ever differ from between the two trackers than there will be a "VIN ERR" on the speedo display that cannot be cleared by anyone except HD HQ.

When you say 'our bikes' which specific models are you referring to? There is no mileage stored in the ECM on my 2010 Ultra.

When speedos are changed for whatever reason, H-D sends the new one to your dealer and guesstimates the mileage based on your mileage when the order was placed and the length of time before you receive and install the new unit. They never match, and there are no VIN ERR codes.

The following note is from the installation instructions for the Harley Combination Speedometer/Tachometer:

Both the ECM and speedometer retain the odometer value.
If the speedometer is replaced, it will display the odometer
value stored in the ECM. The replacement speedometer
will become locked to the ECM after 31.1 miles (50km)
have been accumulated. The trip B odometer will display
the countdown mileage. Once the countdown reaches
zero, the speedometer is locked to the ECM. If installed
on another vehicle the odometer will display "VIN ERR".
If the speedometer is removed from the vehicle before the
countdown reaches zero, it has not been locked to the
ECM. This mileage countdown allows for a road test to
verify that speedometer replacement was the proper repair.

That's interesting. I wonder why they didn't do that with all models?

It's the same on all (later) model bikes with factory ICM/ECM's.
