Default Shifter peg help

I recently purchased a third party version of the o-ring shifter peg linked below. When received it is already assembled with the nut screwed on and since it freely rotates I cannot for the life of me get the nut off because the cap is already on the end and I can't pop the cap off to grip the bolt end. I thought that if I could take the nut off I could push the bolt through and pop the cap off. This way when I put it on I can properly tighten it.

Any suggestions on getting the cap off without damaging the finish? I have a small pick tool that I tried but the cap is flush against the peg.

Sure looks like the cap should pop off. Try putting a rag inside the jaws of a pair of channel locks, grip the cap and rock it side to side. Should pop out.

I think the nut is to tighten the peg onto the shift arm. The peg should rotate freely as you shift with it.

I don't know what would be under the cap, but if you carefully hold the threaded end of the shaft with a well padded vise grip you might be able to use a wrench to loosen the nut.

The cap is actually inset. If you click on the installation link in my original post you will se an exploded view of the part.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try them a little later.

The HD version look like it has a notch where you could get a pic in to get it off. Since yours is flush you might try the end of a single edge razor blade to get underneath it. Be careful..

Maybe try putting a scrap nut on the end of the bolt and give that a tap. It should push the cap out enough to get a putty knife of something under the cap edge.

Plastic putty knife, available at Home Depot etc. Pop that cap off at the seam.

OK, this thing is driving me nuts. I'm providing pics for a better visual. The nut is tightened down and I can't back it off because the bolt spins freely. To access the bolt head I need to take the end cap off which is inset. I used a small pick and a razor blade and could not get it out but put a small scratch in it. This should have been a 30 second job. I also tried using small clamp with rubber tips to hold the end of the bolt and tried turning the nut, no luck.

I'm quickly losing patients.

Can you get a nut same thread, with some weld points or capped where it only grabs a couple threads, put a wrench on both nuts and loosen the one you're trying too.
