Went the week before this time to do more riding. Much more enjoyable for me. There are still a lot of people, but not many shops were set up, but then again, I wasn't looking to buy anything. I liked not having to wait in line for anything. Temps in the 70's made riding all day possible. Last year with temps in the 90's, I was wiped out mid day.
Needles is a lot easier 1 up and with not much traffic.
Wyoming was just beautiful. Can't wait to get back there. The long sweepers in the hills are a blast to run.
Badlands were pretty cool, as was the lower loop in Custer Park.
With a lot more miles under my belt vs last year, I could look around a lot more and got to see things that I missed last year.
The only issue I had was when we went to the Badlands. 15-18 miles East of Rapid City, one eye started watering, stopped, then the other. I mean running down my face. I attributed it to the sun block I put on and kept on riding. Late after noon on our way back, I see the sign for Rapid City 18 miles. BAM! both eyes start running again and I can't see much. Pull over to wipe them out and just as I get ready to take off, BAM! Both eyes and now my nose are running like crazy. I get them cleared enough so that I can take off and a few miles down the road, they are back to normal. Someone in our group did notice construction going on in that stretch and thought that the dust they were kicking up might have something in it that I am allergic to. When we took off, Friday morning and rolled through that same stretch, there was no construction crew and everything was fine.
I flew my Cessna up last year to Sturgis and camped out at the airport for free under the wing. I understand what Sturgis is about, bikes and women's tit's, but I would not ride up during the actual week, way too much traffic, and finding parking? If your looking for less crowds why not ride up in early July or late August when it's cheaper. But for the true experience you have to go during the week of the rally. Beer, boob's, sex, t-shirts, vendors, drunks, DUI's, bands, and I do believe that last year 3/4 of Harleys inventory was in that town that week. I would recommend this as a place to hold a bachelor party, it would make a man wise up !!
