If it's not raining, I ride the bike to work. Of course it's only a 2.9 mile ride on surface streets

I commute on my bike as often as possible. Its about a 100 mile round trip. 25 miles in to work, and for some reason it's usually about 75 miles home.

I commute during good weather. I get 25 miles each way, only three are hwy, the rest are rural.

rear ending someone, car or bike, is almost always avoidable... don't follow so close.
that said, what scares me the most is lane changers, but they are easy enough to deal with as long as you pay attention to where you are in relation to where they are.

Yes and no. In traffic like in San Diego, if you don't follow so close you pretty much won't go anywhere. You leave 20 feet between you and the car in front of you, a 25 foot car will cut into your lane! And when you consider that a 3000 lb car will beat a 700lb bike any day of the week, it's not like you can try to stand your ground. [:@]

But you're right, you really shouldn't follow so close.

I know what you mean! My last job was a pain. I'd ride my Lowrider to the office, but it was business casual on Fridays (jeans). I tried just wearing my khaki pants, but it's too hot here for that! (Look like I peed my pants all the way into work!) I wear my jeans (better protection anyways), and just go change in the bathroom when I would get in.

Cryptoboy, I had the same problem with the heat. I put a sheep skin cover on the seat. It solved the problem.

I used to ride all day around the city as a messenger, so I was "always commuting." I got extremely spoiled riding a bike and splitting lanes. It is second nature to me now and has been for many years. I am currently teaching this to Scootergrrl. Riding on the socal freeways can be scary, especially in traffic. I have never lived more than 10 miles from any job, but if you do commute on your bike which I say is a no brainer, just ease into it like you are doing. the more you ride on the freeway, the more comfortable you are. I have been in several accidents, and none of them have ever been on the freeway or as a result of splitting lanes. I can't figure out how to turn of italics, so bear with me. This is not for a lack of time spent splitting lanes, believe me. I think that the freeway is much safer that the streets because all the traffic is going in the same direction, and close to the same speed. People still drives like asses, but that is jsut the way it is. I say take the bike everyday, unless it is raining. That is what I would do. And as far as the jeans issue goes, I wuld wear Dickies pants every other day if I wasn't allowed to wear jeans.

Without having experienced LA freeway driving, I don't think most people can appreciate what your commute is like. After being away from it for only 2 years, coming back into the mess was a shock to my system. When I left town it was via Ojai and rte 33 and not the I5.
Both the wife and I could never get over the phenomina of drivers going like mad up the hill and then slowing at the top.

What are your thoughts on commuting daily? Too Dangerous?
I don't think commuting is more dangerous, it's just more exposure. Every time you ride you have a chance of getting into an accident. If you ride more, you take more chances. That's not a reason to avoid riding -- it's just why the more you ride the more seriously you should take it.
