That is interesting, can I ask where you heard/learned this?

Is it that bad, to the point you want to remove it or just not your style?

denim paint is still a 2 stage paint. just the clear used is flat. you can remove the pinstripe on a gloss paint job but it is major work. you have to sand the clear down, remove the stripping, sand everything smooth with out sanding through the color, then re shoot clear. denim, or flat colors, are a one time shoot because it wont blend in to match. if you have to do any repairs, you have to strip the part and start over.

Yeah, whether it's clearcoated or not, there's no way to take the stripe off without repainting it.

I was at the HD dealer today and looked at the bikes with flat paint, they are cleared over the paint, and decal.
There is no ridge on the decal and you can see the paint has been cleared, as well as the decal.
The older models might not have been cleared but these were.

I think they now clear the tank only to protect it from gas spills and leave the fenders plain. Not really positive about that either. I like gloss!

That's my understanding as well.

Yes they are. The clear coat is satin.

You are probably right but these quotes may add to the confusion. Taken from some older threads from supposed painters and such....sounds like there was an activator & not a clear coat in 06-07.

"Started as a flat paint with no clear in 06, 08 they put a flat clear on it."

"Harley's black denim paints have to be bought through Harley (pricey) and can be bought as just a single stage or with a flat clear. They call for the clear on tanks, spilled gas could eat into the single stage, and for added UV protection."

"For 06 you need the HD Black Denim and the HD Activator.
No clear coat, no buffing, no wet sanding, no "flatteners", etc."

"Not a 100% positive but, the factory paint is Acrylic Urethane consisting of a Denim Black paint with Activator. This produces a very hard finish.
H-D also sells an Acrylic Laquer Denim Clearcoat that can be sprayed over Laquer paint or to repair over Urethane. This can be purchased in a spray can."
