Default Ft Irwin California??

Just curious if anyone here has ever been stationed at FT Irwin CA, or lives near here. Army isn't giving me many options on this next PCS, Ft Irwin Ca, Ft Riley Kansas and FT Drum NY. FT Drum is too damn cold and short riding season. Ft Riley the wife says her name isn't Dorothy and we dont own a dog..lol Leaving Ft Irwin. I'm a east coast guy but I figure this is the less of the 3 evils. What's out there? Riding? dealers or a good indy? Thanks in advance.

1. Drum is COLD...you are right

2. Iriwin is inthe middle of nowhere, but you can get on the highway and get to the coast

3. Riley is a nice place, though the wind is there. Closer to "civilization", ie,towns where family can go do stuff.

The10th & the 1st are good proud units with a long history. Irwin is a great training base an contribtes greatly to desert ops sucess. just depends what your job is and what you are looking for.

Although I have never been stationed at Irwin, I rode by the I15 turn off on Saturday during a day ride from here to Barsow, then Route 66 to Victorville Harley-Davidson, and back. It was still nice enough for just a t-shirt once out of the higher elevations. Big Bear is also not that far away from Barstow.

I used to live in the high desert until just recently. I worked at Irwin for a while and frequently was out other for other reasons. Be ready to ride in wind, wind, wind. I've ridden out to Irwin and there's no breeze at all, then left and had 60-70 MPH gusts the whole way. And those wind speeds are common there year round.

I was there from 1999-2001. Not bad but I grew up an hour and half away from there. I will put to you this way; I will not go back. I can't register my bike in Califonia and they don't like my guns so it's not for me. Barstow is the armpit of California and Drum is not fun. Riley is much nicer and as others said there are things to do. We used to spend one day a weekend driving out to Victorville for shopping and dinner. That is where the nearest mall or anything worth a damn. The Barstow Walmart will blow you away.

In the middle of nowhere and a downright nasty area. However, you can ride in a few hours to Big Bear, Vegas, and the coast. SJ Ron

Why can't you register your bike here? And what is the problem with your guns? My 49 state bike is registered here as are my handguns and assault weapon.

Did a couple of NTC rotations at Irwin back in 2002. All I remember was it was in the middle of nowhere, dusty, and hot as hell. Those are pretty crappy choices, I would be stuck between Irwin and Riley. I'd be leaning towards the Big Red 1 though.

I'm not worried about my handguns nor my Kel Tec. My suppressed SBR with 30 round mags would get me since I didn't register it with the state before 2005. Since I would be moving back to the state I could be considered as importing banned mags. Although the military rule would protect me I'm still a California resident thus voiding that exemption. If my SBR didn't get me my Saiga with detachable drum would.

As for the bike, it would need inspection from DMV. The aftermarket pipes and the tuner (that states it can't be registered in California) would probably
cause some problems for me. Hell, my lawnmower has a huge sticker on it that states it can't be sold in California.

Lastly, I don't like paying the outrageous state taxes. As long as I'm not working in the state I don't have to pay them.
