Is the GPS that is installed on the newer HD's with XM radio worth activating? I have the option on my bike but am considering that or buying a Handle bar mounted GPS. What is your input?
Go with the Handlebar mounted. YOu can not program the one built into the radio, nor will it show any mapping features. Both are important if you really want to use a GPS properly. When you are out in an unknown area, and you are looking for a decent riding road, the Mapping is invaluable. When you are planning a trip into unknown areas, the ability to sit at your computer and plan your route, and stops, is far beyond valuable.

I use the TomTom Rider handle bar mounted with a blue tooth helmet connection and its very good, Water proof and you can also use it in any other vehicle with an extra mount. I have all of the spped cameras fixed & mobile programmed into mine as including these items is childs play with the TomTOm and a PC hook up.
Activating a GPS??? you have to activate (purchase, or a free trial) a satellite radio service such as XM, but the GPS is just a receiver that isn't a service that someone (other than the government) controls. If you have the GPS module already in the radio (you've paid for it extra) then use it. it isn't the best as noted above. I have a oldGarmin 2610 mounted on my handlebars. Lots of others that do the same thing, probably Zumo is best.
I'd say go with a stand alone,it affords you more optionsand at the same time makes to bike less expensive when you go the sell it. ck. out the GPS on the right side. Good luck on your search.
Go with the stand alone, that way you can use it in your car also. I got a Garmin Quest 2 from Abe's of Maine for $300 & change off of the going rate.

If the money allows, go for the Zumo. Not only do u get the GPS, but you can have MP3, audible books and at an extra cost (0f course...) XM radio with the trafficNav. The traffic nav systems gives you weather and forcasts along with being able to route around automatically any traffic problems in the major cities.
The sweet thing about the radio part is it automatically mutes the built in radio for the voice commands. On an MP3 or audible book, it just pauses it for a split second while it talks.
