Bad Voltage Regulator - or something else?
Put your meter on AC and measure the battery voltage with the bike running. Then do the same on DC scale. If the DC reading is low, and/or the AC is high…and everything else is nominal (good ground), then I'd suspect the regulator.

Thanks much for the responses. I checked and cleaned all connectors and grounds (contact areas and mounting bolts) and, after reassembly, the battery still reads 14 volts at idle and 17 volts after I rev the engine for a few seconds. So... I'm going to gamble that it's the reg. Prices on ebay for OEM regs (from out-of-state dealers) was not that bad so I went ahead and ordered one. Hope it comes soon because it's PERFECT riding weather here in CA (he - he) .
Thanks again for all the great advise.
