go to mohave co craigs list ...harley davidson ....there in AZ but there are some nice 883 there your price range and nice bikes....theres a 95 in kingman for 3500, '95 883 for 2850 in golden valley...its a drive from cali but thats the best i can do....
Look for the newest Sportster you can find for $3500. Beware of older baggers that are priced that cheap. They will more then likely need work, read $$$ to get them running right. If all you have is $3500, what are you going to fix it with?. Also try not to get tempted to buy a cheap salvage bike. Getting them on the road might be impossible.,,
I bought my custom painted '99 Sportster 883 Hugger for $3500. It was salvage title. I had zero problems with registration. Insurance was cheaper than my Suzuki. I sold it for the same price about four years later. I wish I still had that bike. If you are a small person the Huggers are great. If yo want, you can do the 1200 conversion (although you might not get the money you put into it for the conversion if you sell it). If you buy salvage, just make sure the numbers match on engine, frame and title.
I've been looking for the same thing for my wife for a while in that price range. Sportys in SoCal run $800 to $1000 higher than the rest of the country from what I've seen and I'm looking every day. Most in that range are beater iron heads but there are the occasional deals. Watch craigslist closely. Forget the dealers.
92 sporty for 3200 in whittier cali these are craigs list....just type in a min of 3000 to a max of 4000 there is alot of bikes there are even some non harley that i would look at. Hope that helps. i just did some figuring and on a '13 883 iron with your 3500 down you finance about 4900 dollars which over 60 months(say) is 102.00 thats 50 bi/weekly. I dont know your financial situation but thats a cheap bike...keeping it stock your in a brand new bike and in LA you can ride it all yr....this also was from hd credit the intrest rate is a stupid 9.49% i think if you got pre approved i think you can do better......at a credit union or bank.....good luck...go to hd website and get on to the estimate paymets and fool around with it .........
key thing here is soCal. A really decent one is going to be $4-5k, but there are deals just gotta catch them when they pop up. And the year doesn't seem to matter much unless it's an '07 or up. Those hit the $6-7k range.

That's the same thing I've noticed in socal, most bikes in general seem to bring a little more money than most other places I've looked. Most of the rigid mounts are around the same price same with rubber mount and efi. That said you can find some deals out there just gotta be patient, don't jump on the first thing you can afford.
