I,m about to retire from the Army and I have been looking at a new ride, I have been away from riding since 99. My last bike was 94 FXR pictured, but due to deployments and KIDS!!! I no longer have the bike. i have looked at a 05 Dyna Wide Glide EFI, 99 Softail standard and a 94 Heritage. I will be doing longer rides and 50 percent of the time probably be 2 up riding. What are some suggestions and comments. I also would like suggestions pertaining to carb'ed or EFI models. I have only messed with Carb'ed where the EFI makes me nervous when it comes to cost repairs or leaving me stranded on the road.
Look at newer, 2005 and up with EFI. Very dependable bikes.
If you're going to be doing longer, two up riding, look at a Heritage as well as the Road King. Great bikes, and when asked about the best all around bikes Harley makes, those are the two tha get mentioned the most. Either is comfortable two up and capable of long trips. You might want to look at 09 and up on the Road King, bigger fuel tank, frame changes that made a big difference in handling, 96cid and 6 speed tranny.
I've ridden for a long time, and the newer bikes are as dependable as your late model car. Maintain it and ride it and there really aren't a lot of issues that are going to leave you broke down somewhere!

Welcome from Shamokin / Coal Township Pa. Thank you for your service to our country. My suggestion is since you are an experienced rider, I wouldn't hesitate to look for a Street Glide or Ultra.
Thanks so far for all of the great input. I would like to add that i do intend to do a lot of traveling but this will my primary bike get around town bike also. At least until I save up for another bike, If the BOSS will gives permission...
I would look in to a later model touring model with delphi fuel injection and 6 speed trans. You will get reliability, comfort, and storage space. Carb bikes are easy to work on but the advantage of efi is they are turn key and go. Ethanol fuel is spreading and it is the worst thing for carb bikes. The alcohol dries rubber components and attracts water causing more corrosion. Efi bikes are also hit with it but the parts are more resilient to the effects.

Based on info you provided, I'd highly recommend a 2009 or newer touring bike. Road King is my personal favorite. You and your missus will appreciate the touring bike's ride compared to others. I have 35k miles on my 2011, and the EFI has been trouble free. And it's really nice as it starts right up, every time. Mine has cruise control. I didn't think I'd like it, but on long rides, it is a life saver!! I'll never have another bike without it.
