Akoury AK-88. There's a huge thread about them on the site. After reading about them, I bought one and love it. 3 of my friends liked it so much, they bought them too.
I'm sorry but if you are required to wear a helmet why not wear one that will save your skull during an accident. I'm not being the helmet police here by no means as I've worn the beanie helmet for years so that I was just as cool as the next guy. In 1995 while in Clearwater, Fla I had a friend wearing a fake DOT sticker helmet hit by a car and the helmet flew off his head and broke in half. He was left with a good part of his brain having severe damage. He could no longer work as a bike mechanic, remember his friends of many years. He also could not speak well or if asked a question answer in any kind of normal time period. It was after that accident that I decided that my life was worth a much better and real DOT helmet. I also believe that all bikers should have freedom of choice. Use yours wisely. Best to You Fairshake

Solid points. Sorry about your friend.
I rode with those little toy helmets for more than a decade and have found that a good 3/4 is way better at speed. Less lift less noise more comfort and protection.
Beanie helmets suck as a piece of gear IMHO and often aint worth the 10 bucks you pay for em.
I like my HJC 3/4 with visor and retractable shades. Sure I look like an alian/giant mushroom head. But at least my head with be intact. With that said I don't want to mix the stuff that gets on me during work with my good helmet. So I just got a basic DOT half helmet, flat black. Very low profile from what I understand and about $55. I don't want to buy another $200 helmet to make it nasty from work. Sure half helmets aren't the best. But it's better than nothing and nothing is what a lot of riders out here wear. I normally wear a vest/jacket as well. From time to time gloves too.
I just bought the new Bell Custom 500 in matte orange flake. It's been redesigned to be a lower profile helmet. Go on Revzilla and watch the video. My friend has the Akoury 88 that's a 1/2 helmet that sits low but it looks like it's built like crap. Also Skull Crush has a nice one.
Update on the new Bell Custom 500. i just got it delivered today and the look is awesome for a DOT helmet. The matte orange flake is cool and the vintage vibe rocks. Check it out on Revzilla.
I had a skid lid half and just got an Akoury Ak88 last week. I really like the AK88. I have only had my bike a little over a year and I havent did any highway riding, but when I do make that move I might look into a full face. If you're looking for the smallest lightest DOT helmet, I'd say it would have to be the AK88. And I read on other forums about people worrying about the size chart, but I think its right on. Mine fits perfect. The helmet was $115 after shipping and all.
