Rt. 66 west of Yukon is a shitty road. Yeah, they patch the road, but it`s still a rough ride between there and El Reno. This may be old info., though, since I went that way a little over a year ago.
I've ridden Route 66 thru New Mexico...the road is generally ok, but there are a lot of rough sections. The worst part I found was that most of the route is becoming nothing but abandoned businesses and derelict buildings. I passed that way last September and found it mostly depressing since 2006 (the last time I rode it).
Still, there are some sections worth seeing...take your time and explore...you may still find some gems.
It's definitely worth seeing. I've done bits around St. Louis, from OKC to Joplin, and from Needles to Flagstaff. Depending on where you are, the road is modernized, in awful shape, abandoned, or thriving with tourist traps.
My advice is do as much as you can as soon as you can....It'll be gone soon.
For an old two land blacktop, it's not too bad out farther east. It's a pretty decent ride between Tulsa and OKC. Take you right by the Big Round Barn and Pop's Place...

Just be aware when you get into Texas, gas stations begin to be about 50 or so miles apart. They become even further apart when you get into New Mexico. Just something to keep an eye on. And Kingman, AZ to Vegas is about 130 miles, so gas up there. Nothing but wide open desert and junkyards in between.
I did it from Chicago to LA back in 2010. As said earlier, there is alot of neglected road and run down buikdings. But the history, people along the way, and the feeling you get riding it makes it all the more worth doing.

It's really the best ride you can do in this country. Rt.50 being a close second.
