I sit on mine. Put the bill between your legs, while sitting, it will match the contour of the front of the seat, allowing the 'cap' to sit up-right and not get squished. If it is really windy, sit on more of the bill….

I always put a grommet in mine and clip to my belt with a carabiner

What's wrong with putting some type of small bag on your bike to hold a hat, water bottle, cigars or butts, cell phone? I've seen some cool black leather bags that attach to the swing arm that are almost invisible.
