I know Ive went by many leos way above the limit and havent been pulled. Anybody got some input on this?
Alot of LEO's don't mess with bikes, especially crotch rockets because if they run, it usually ends ugly and the liability is too great.
What he said with the exception of alot I would say most. Most won't even attempt to pursue due to the most probable reason, if they run, I/we can't catch 'em.
Not too long ago I wrote a guy on a Suzuki Hayabusa for 128mph in a 70mph zone, and have written many in the 100plus range.
There are times when our patrol cars are no match for some of these bikes, but to just turn your head with a "there was nothing I could do" attitude is pure Bull Sh.t
Got stopped a couple of months ago, just a warning. I didn't see the change in speed limits, 70mph to 55 mph. After that I installed my radar detector on the bike. I use it in my truck, so I thought, why not. Just bought a Tech mount for the handle bar and a longer cord to run under the tank and wired it to the battery. Works great!
I had three speeding tickets back in 2000, all three were for 10 mph over. It raised my insurance so much I had to sell, at a loss, my new Jimmy. When i bought my bike in '01 the insurance dropped me after 1 month. Yea, I know, I was speeding, but 10 mph over, come on. Funny thing is, I don't speed on the Interstate only around town. The radar detector has saved me a bunch in fines so far. I know where all the school zones are so I don't speed there, just two lane highways and back roads, around town.
and how would a cop know a detector is being used in the first place?
and if the detector is illegal is it taken away? or just an additional ticket issued?
All radar detectors leak a small amount of signal that police can detect by using a "Radar Detector Detector" (RDD). Over 30 police departments' worldwide use the the Spectre RDD.
The first RDD's (VG-2's) were designed to detect and reveal radar detector presence by recognizing its tuning oscillator. Radar detector companies struck back by moving their tuning frequency outside this scanned area, making their units "VG-2 Proof".

Radar detectors are illegal forCommercial Motor Vehicles in the United States.Common practice around here is to just issue a ticket for them, but without a doubt, the officer could seize it and hold it for evidence. As far as personal vehicles, (cars, trucks, motorcycles) I don't know of any state where they are illegal, but they maybe?

I know going into VA it states that radar detectors are illegal. As far as knowing if someone is using them have you ever seen someone pass you on the highway get on the crest of a the hill then quickly apply the brakes. 9 out of 10 time there is someone running radar on the bottom of the hill. I see it all the time on I94 going from WI to the Twin Cities.
