The wife has a Pioneer INNO or something like that that she got at WalMart. They are about 229.00. It is a combination MP3 player and XM Satillite radio. It is self contained and has it's own built in antenna for the satillite. It actually works pretty well on XM as long as you are outside and nothing gets in the way of the antenna. It has a capacity of about 250 recordedsongs, and is capable of recording music right off of XM radio.

Don't know about battery life as she has it connected directly to the battery with a cigarette lighter plug, which would be easy enough to do on any bike.

It would be my first choice for a mobile system.

Regards,

Bill

Since you're a proclaimed computer dweeb, I was wondering if you should even bother. Here's the problem:you got to get music downloaded onto the Ipod. You'll need to have a computer, a USB plug and some computer knowledge to install the software, not the least of which is some CDs to run so you can copy the music you want.
I have no idea if you're technically equipped to do this, but if you are asking how do I get the music onto the device, it's a great question, but it suggests to me you don't andyou need to find someone who knows how to do this stuffas it willlikely be a little daunting if you're not up to speed. I'm not dissing you, just saying this ain't a good step to get into the computer technology world.
Good luck however.

A buddy of mine put a cigarette lighter plug on his '03 Heritage. It took me a bit to figure out what it was upon first glance. He did it up right. He took a metal plate and cut a flame pattern out of it to use as the backplate for the lighter plug. Even had it chrome plated.Placed it above his horn on the left side. Looks damn near factory. I told him, "I didn't know you smoked?" He said, "I don't. I rock to my tunes on long trips!" There you go........

Another vote AGAINST the IPOD here. I got a 2GB Nano for Xmas, never played more than 1 song without freezing and needing to be restarted (something you couldn't do while riding and shouldn't have to do in the first place)taken it back to the Apple store twice, they just keep reformatting it, I'm still waiting to speak with a "genious" who will apparently replace it.

From what i've heard the larger one's aren't too bad, ie the 20-40GB or whatever they are, but almost ALL the nano's have problems....wish I would have never gotten mine.

Wife had the same thing on her Heritage. Stainless steel bracket mounted below the coil cover. Couldn't hardly tell it was there unless you really looked close.

i took my sansa 2 gig to sturgis this year. kept it in the tank bag so i could see what was playing and adjust the volume if needed. i also picked up the shure 2 somethingoranother sound isolation earphones. these things were awesome. i usually ride with ear plugs on longer trips and these doubled as plugs if i didnt want music.
as far as battery life, we took 3 days to get there and i didnt have to charge it once. i did bring along the cable and picked up a cigarette-usb adapter on the way so i could charge it in the truck we had with us.
same set up on the way back too. really made the ride a better time. rode from seattle to sturgis in 03 with just myself to listen too, not nearly as fun.

Never have had a problem with my 4 gb nano on trips. Took it to Laughlin last year, never charged it and wore it the way home too. I kept it in my front pocket on my jeans. I have an older nano...

Ok so once I pick one, how do you get music on it?
When you get an iPod it does not bring the software to run it. It will require that you download iTunes from their website which is free but it is a big file (around 60MB) which is no big deal if you have a cable modem or DSL but if you’re on a dial-up connection, plan on being there for an hour or so.

The software is very easy to use in my opinion and buying music from their site is a snap and comparable in price to other music sites. They have a vast selection of music but there have been some artists that I couldn’t find on their site as a result of licensing agreements. AC/DC was one of them. However you can load all your current audio CD’s and MP3 files into your library with no problems. When you pop in your favorite CD, it will automatically ask you if you want to import it into iTunes.

Once you have all your music loaded on your computer, you just plug in your iPod with the supplied USB cable and it will automatically sync with your computer.

I have a 30Gig video iPod that I have had for almost 2 years that has music videos, movies, and TV shows that I downloaded from their site along with my music. The cool thing about this is you can plug it into a TV that has standard video input jacks and watch your video programs like a VCR/DVR. Works awesome if you are traveling as most hotel TVs have these standard jacks.

My wife has an 8gig nano and my daughter a 2 gig nano. We have had no problems with them at all. The battery on mine will still last around 12-16 hours listing to music or about 3 hours watching video. The nano’s will usually last around 8-12 hours or so.

Now for the bad news. You have as many accessories for these damn things as you do for your Harley. You can get car adapters that will not only charge your iPod but also broadcast it in FM so that any radio that is nearby will pick up the signal. If you want to charge it without having to connect it to your computer, you will have to get a plug in adapter or the car adapter. There are even plug in modules so that you can use standard AA batteries as well.

The thing that sold me on it was the quality of audio. I have had MP3 players in the past and have listened to my friends and to me they don’t compare to the audio quality of the iPod. The provided ear buds that come with them are okay but I opted for the Bose ear buds which were a little pricey, but they sound incredible.
Hope I answered some of your questions.

Question: I know it varies. But about how much space does a movie or tv show take up on the video iPod? I know songs can take anywhere from 2-5 meg (dependent upon bit rate quality). Just curious. I didn't know the video iPod could hook up to the television to play the movies/shows? Given that I travel so much, thatwould come in handy.

Video on average will use about 1 Gig per hour. You will have to buy the video cable set which I got on eBay pretty cheap. It's about 8ft long andhas the three RCA jacks on one end with the mini phono jack on the other that plugs into the same place you plug in your headphones. Simple as that.

It sure helps when you miss a favorite show. I missed a couple of episodes of Prison Break, so I just jumped on their site and downloaded away.
