OP: I've got a buddy who's been riding Harleys since the late '70's. His bike choices have been 1st: Sportster, 2nd: big twin, 3rd: sportster, 4th: big twin, and finally back to sportster where he's stayed for years. He said he finally realized that he likes a sportster best, regardless of how many people think that you must eventually "move up" to a big twin.

He's average height and weight, and has ridden through all of the lower 48 on a sportster.
That's why I wear a FF helmet with dark shield....;-)

Sounds like me with my Harley's. Went from a 1975 Sportster to a 1974 FXE Super Glide to a 1984 Sportster to a 1981 FXS Low Rider, to a 1990 Sportster to a 2000 Fat Boy to a 2007 Ultra Glide Classic to a 2007 Sportster to a 2014 Sportster...finally figured out that I am a Sportster kinda rider.

I've rode both for many miles in high cross winds, the Sportster is much worse. Then pass a big rig and you're hanging on for you fugging life. They're extremely unstable in high winds. Because they're the lightest in the Harley line up, they're the worse in the line up in regard to winds.

I just traded my two Sportsters (09 883L and a 05 1200R) in on a 2013 Street Bob and don't regret it at all! I love the hell out of that Roadster but the Bob puts it to shame in every way. In my book Dyna's are just big sportsters and only slightly more weight - not really enough for me to tell anyway. The Bob is agile enough to make store trips and heavy enough for long highway/interstate travel. Don't think I'll ever have another sportster,,

A lot of people love their Sportsters, but they are a different breed. And if you're a good sized fella, you'll "outgrow" that Sportster pretty fast and wish you would have kept the Dyna.
What a BS. I'm 6'2". I rode everything the dealership had and there was nothing better than XL1200R. This "outgrow" talk is BS, too. You want to "upgrade" to something what is harder to ride, is slower and clumsier? Grow up, dude, get what is best for you, not what you think looks best.

That is the truth. I know a couple of idiots who were perfectly happy with a Sportster until peer pressure from their buddies caused them to cave in and buy a big twin. Herd mentality at its worst.

If you got a super glide you better enjoy it while you got it,
because Harley quit making them, if you want a super glide
in the future it will be a used one.
