Well it's time for my yearly road trip and I've been trying to decide on which helmet to take. I have been trying to make up my mind on a 1/2, 3/4 or 3/4 with flip down shield. I really don't like my flip down shield Harley helmet except for cold weather. I like my 1/2 around town but on long trips ear plugs are a must and sometimes the wind wears on me. I think I'm going to give my 3/4 Bell Custom a try this year. This will be the first good test for it since I purchased it at Christmas time. Does anyone else have trouble deciding on a comfortable helmet for long distance trips ? I really try to think about safety but I have yet to find a full face helmet I can stand. I'm considering a Shoei 3/4 with no shield as my next helmet.
I agree with you, I have a full face but hate wearing it.
I used to ride with the Harley Jet 3/4 Helmet with a shield. I took the shield off and wore glasses or goggles and I really love the feeling, but the helmet is hideous and too heavy for long trips. My Biltwell Bonanza is arriving any day now and I reckon I'll use that for most of my trips.
I have a 3/4 with flip down "sunglasses" built into the helmet and a face shield. There's no way I would ride without the shield. Too many bugs and too much wind. It keeps both off of my face.

Agree, too many bugs in Texas, especially East Texas when the love bugs are out.

I have not tried it but have been in the market for a good helmet. If you are talking about long rides take a look at the Shoei NEOTEC modular helmet. Looks to be at Revzilla for $584.00. Supposed to be quiet, extremely light weight, great built in sun shield and, most importantly, having ability to flip up the chin guard to blow out some snot makes it all worthwhile! I am hoping to get some user feedback.

I totally agree about the comment on the Harley Jet 3/4 with flip down shield. I also took the shield off but still didn't like the bulky size and weight. The Bell Custom 3/4 is much lighter and less bulky but doesn't have much padding. I will know how well I like it after riding all day for seven days in a row. I would like a higher quality helmet but can't afford to spend a few hundred here and there trying to find the right one. Guess I'll keep reading reviews and then try something from Revzilla. Sure would be great to find a shop that carried all the premium helmets.
For multi-day road trips, I just make it easy on myself and grab the full face and a pair of shades. Bugs, rain, road dust, rocks kicked up by trucks, whatever, I just ride and forget about it.
I have to do full face for long rides in particular, Bell Bullit is my current. I cleaned it up last night, must have taken off about 50 bugs. And that's just from two night rides.
Cleaning those off my face and glasses would take the fun out of riding for me. Of course, the sand, rocks and dirt kicked up by the 18 wheelers on the interstate would sand blast it off, maybe I should ride with my half more?
I have the Shoei Neotec with the flip up face guard, shield, and sun visor. Great helmet. Light, great padding, quiet, comes in various colors. Mine is set up with speakers and mike. Takes some getting used to because the padding is very tight, but loosens up the more you wear it. I feel very confident that if I take a pavement kiss, my face and jaw will be protected. Very good air flow through the Shoei. Not cheap by any means. But, what are your brains worth? Hope this helps.
